Re: Garage and road project
The spray insulation guy canceled because of the heat. I just read where heat illnesses increase during periods of excess heat. I never would have figured that out.

You might remember we had them put up that metal building for Tina, a double run in stall with an enclosed feed room. It was much closer to the house, and she didn't have to cross that creek that was prone to flooding in the spring and fall and icing over in the winter. Very NICE little barn and the livestock loved it. Plus, it had power run to it. A rough view before the interior panels were put up and the wiring was done.Sir Henry wrote: ↑Wed Aug 21, 2024 11:46 amWell I did something really stupid. I hooked my trailer up to the van and pulled it out. When I hooked the trailer up I opened the back door and the pull down rope caught caught in the door. That’s a thousand dollar mistake.

Working behind the barn, less than two weeks after the barn was up and in use, Tina's foot slipped and she caught the back of the barn with the corner of the bucket, tearing a 1'x2' hole thru the metal siding.
She looked at the siding we had on hand for other projects and didn't have any to match. The builder came up from Texas, and we weren't driving down. The two hardware stores didn't have an exact match. We could call and ask for a scrap to be sent up via Fedex or UPS but bad weather was coming. Tina used 100mph metal tape to patch the hole.
Two years later, the tape is still there, hasn't leaked a drop and she hasn't ever mentioned it again. It's her barn, and it never bothered me since "I" didn't do it and she isn't giving ME grief over it every time she sees it.
As for the heat, I don't blame the Spray Foam guy for cancelling. Our contractor who did our job did it on a 90 degree day and they limited the Guy in the Suit to 30 - 45 minutes, then he came out, and another guy went in while the guy in the suit stripped down to shorts, and was cooled down with the hose and drank two quarts of gator aide. Sweat was pouring off him. The chemicals are toxic while being sprayed.
They did the garage, left and went to lunch. Then came back and did the woodshop. One guy knocked out the garage in a 40 minute session. Took the two man tag team to do the wood shop, but they did a great job. I wouldn't want to do an attic on a scorching day, unless I had a climate controlled suit.

I tied the strap onto the tractor and pulled it right out. It surprised me how good it looks. If you didn’t notice it was bent at one time you don’t notice it. Even knowing it you have to be two feet away to see anything.BrokenolMarine wrote: ↑Wed Aug 28, 2024 11:00 pmYou might remember we had them put up that metal building for Tina, a double run in stall with an enclosed feed room. All I said was, we can buy a piece of siding to match, and patch it.

It was too hot one day and it rained the next day. They said in high humidity the foam won’t stick to steel. We rescheduled for next week for maybe even the week after.

Re: Garage and road project
I left the garage peak light on tonight. It’s on a dusk to dawn sensor. It’s odd to look up the hill and see lights there. It has two LEDs each producing 4,000 lumens. It sure makes the place look bigger.
Tomorrow I’ll seal the chimney and install the storm guard. Next weak I’ll reschedule the spray foam insulation. Then it’s throw some plywood up on the lower four feet and paint it. The final part will be to buy some tool cabinets and tables.

I aimed the lights and took this picture before it got totally dark. Before they were aimed too wide and were in the ditch.
I also sealed the chimney earlier today.

I’ve said it before but I’m going to say it again now that there is even more to appreciate.
I’m sure the folks who drive by (not sure how much can be seen from the road) must appreciate the buildings with the lights highlighting the red color siding. I bet it looks great!

I don’t think it can be seen from the road. It’s one of the reasons I put it so far back.Hatchdog wrote: ↑Sun Sep 01, 2024 9:43 amI’ve said it before but I’m going to say it again now that there is even more to appreciate.

Here at night we don't dare have our place lit up. It makes us a target. We're just over 1/4 mile from the road behind the trees of an orchard and forest. Can't be seen from the road day or night, but the after glow of lights at night would pin point us to the unsavory. With the trees and no lights at night, it is usually very dark. The city slicker thugs are afraid of the very dark. It spooks them and they don't like stepping on noisy yard debris they can't see. We haven't had any problems since we killed the lights.

Re: Garage and road project
I live in a very safe area. You can’t drive but a few feet before you see a political sign and those signs are 100% in support of one party. People have scarecrows holding rifles in their yards. The police pull cars over with out of state plates. One neighbor has a truck with MN plates and she gets pulled over all the time. There are pockets of areas where you see the opposite political party but the nearest is about 20 miles away.
I was in Madison for three days at the VA Hospital. While I was gone several neighbors stopped at my home and played cards. There was always a car coming and going. I let them enter my house so it’s not empty. There are three people in the neighborhood that I don’t trust and they are friends with a mutual friend. They know my schedule.
My house is very visible from the road. If I were a criminal I would pick a more remote home to rob. I do hear of theft reports and they are all very remote homes. I’ve also been told of a drug problem a few years ago. The locals ran them out.
Okay end of rant.

Game camera. Catch them on sale on amazon, battery powered, sd cards. Point one at the road to the barn. Point one at the doors. Pull the cards every few days, once a week. Amazing clarity these days. If someone is sniffing around, you'll know, if something comes up missing, you will know who.

Re: Garage and road project
About 40% of the houses in Price County are empty vacation properties. Almost all home thefts are in unoccupied houses because there are so many of them. Many are far enough from the roads a moving van could park there for hours without being seen. Occupied home burglaries are very rare here in the country. Small towns are different.BrokenolMarine wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 10:51 amGame camera. Catch them on sale on amazon, battery powered, sd cards. Point one at the road to the barn. With all the rain we get I can tell if someone has been in my driveway. I can usually tell who too by where the marks are in the road or lawn. It’s common to have someone in an ATV, gator, mule or side-by-side visit and they each leave different tire marks. With snow it’s even easier.
I’ve thought of getting a game camera and just might for the new shop.

Re: Garage and road project
We have cctv covering the main house and shops, hard wired with cables so the signals can't be pirated. I picked up four game cameras in two packs on sale and they cover the two distant pasture gates, the coop, and the old barn. With my old career, I don't consider it paranoia, I consider it a response t knowing what really goes on.
A few months after we moved in, a group of juveniles were raving recklessly up and down our tertiary back road on dirtbikes. I don't mind them riding on the roads out here, but they were going way too fast, riding wheelies, and not wearing gloves or helmets. The road is in sad shape, with cracks, potholes, and shifted sections. We were afraid one of them would get hurt. Tina walked out to speak to them and they appeared to listen, but then road off riding wheelies, and made a u turn and blew past again, even faster.
Called the sheriff's office, and when he arrived the deputy asked if we knew any of them. "WE don't, but you might. I pulled up the footage on the flat screen, he laughed. I know them all, and their parents. I'll handle it." Funny, they don't ride by anymore. Those that do, ride by, they don't fly by.
