I'm just getting back up to speed on the Receiver vs. Dovetail install of the peep. HRA really recommends putting the Peep in the dovetail where the buckhorn used to be? Haven't ever tried it, but seems very counterintuitive to have the peep that far from your eyeball. Seems to defeat the purpose.
Has anyone here ever done it that way?

That Anthony quote is what Skinner has posted on their Henry page.

As I shared in another post in on a similar topic, I'm badly far sighted so having a receiver mounted sight that close to my face would be invisible even with my glasses. Yea I know in our older age group I'm in the minority. According to my eye doctor most people my age are near sighted. Anyway my point is consider the condition of your eye sight as a factor in choosing where to mount the sight.

But is the quote from Anthony recent, or from before Skinner started making the Express for Henry rifles? The only factory installed Skinner sight is receiver mounted, so...

I emailed him last week asking his opinion on which way I should go. He has yet to respond.

Re: I’m going to get in BIG trouble...
A very good point. I’m going off my SGC which has the receiver peep, and it works great for my 50 year old eyes. I’m probably just going to choke on the extra money and get what I really want. I’m hoping to be one of the 50% that can use the factory front sight. If not, I’ll get a fibre optic front so it’s better in low light. I have those on my turkey gun and they are awesome.Mags wrote:Anyway my point is consider the condition of your eye sight as a factor in choosing where to mount the sight.

New to me, I thought they were bling. Makes sense now. Its a light pipe, the surface gathers available light and pipes it to the end which appears as a bead on the front sight. Simple but clever.Redthies wrote:... a fibre optic front so it’s better in low light.

Kind of a 'double edged sword'but seems very counterintuitive to have the peep that far from your eyeball. Seems to defeat the purpose.
While there is no denying the advantage of a longer sighting plane with the peep farther from the front and closer to the eye this can result in the peep not being too clear and may make sight acquisition more difficult.
With the peep closet to the front both sights may be closer in focus (depending on the person) and while this may result in a clearer sight picture the shorter sight plane will be less forgiving and slight movements can result in dramatic changes in bullet impact.
I had a chance to test this with my new Ruger PCC as it has a barrel mounted peep with a shielded blade front. I was initially concerned about this and it did take a bit of getting used to but I find I really like both the aperture and blade in relatively clear focus. It took a little more concentration to keep the movement to a minimum but after a little practice I managed good consistency and pretty tight groups. Because it is a semi auto I don't have to break cheek weld for follow-up shots but to maintain a similar pattern of having to move the rifle to reload (as in a lever action) I was laying the rifle on my rest while I spotted each shot with binos. Later on I was offhand kneeling with it and really liking my results at 100+ yards on random targets.

Re: I’m going to get in BIG trouble...
You know ...
I have found that whether you go North, South, East or West; you will be somewhere near a gun shop if you drive far enough. I think they do it on purpose. They put one not more than 1/4 mile from my almost shortest route home from work.
Buying a gun really just can't be helped. It's just best to have one on lay-a-way so that you won't be subject to impulse buying. Unless of course, it's something really special. You can always keep paying on the other one. Or two...
It's not a problem ... not really.
