Beartooth does have good bullets. But be prepared to wait a while after ordering them. It takes them forever to ship them. Cast Performance bullets also are very good. I use those in my 38 55 and they shoot real good in that gun. Al

Look at Beartooth's 405gr LFN GC or their 425 gr 425gr WLN GC. The 425gr has a nice wide meplat at .374, which they say is the widest that will reliably feed thru an 1895 Marlin or 1886 Winchester (they don't mention Henry's). The 405gr has a .310 meplat, so it may penetrate a bit deeper even though it is lighter. They will also size to various diameters for best accuracy. Their bullets are heat treated and have a fantastic reputation. Of course, they better as they are probably the most expensive cast. Still cheaper than the Barnes though.
I've never heard of them but will certainly take a look .... the fact is, I'm finding that there are several good brands out there that I'm not familiar with .... the reality in my world is, I'll most probably be able to hunt under conditions where African level bullets are needed .... none the less, I want to have a few loaded and on hand .... one can always dream .... :D

looked at their link http://beartoothbullets.com/bulletselect/index.htm and found that they offer a 525g WLN GC which they say "For MAXIMUM penetration here's your bullet for .45-70's! Longest, Widest nose possible and still feed through the magazine and action of a Marlin 1895 and Winchester 1886. An amazing bullet! Very accurate. The absolute last word in EXTREME penetration for the .45-70 Gov't., Beartooth Bullets Pile-Driver bullet!" .... to me that is amazing because it goes against the info from most ever other manufacture .... 405 grans has been said to be the largest that the casing can accommodate and meet all specs ....

This is my rule of thumb ..... Cast bullets should kept below 1400 fps and 2000 fps if gas checked . Use Jacket or paper patch bullets above 2000 ...
Copper coated bullet are design for inside gun ranges too keep lead dust down you breath . This is the short version and my opinion ,,,Copper coated and jacket bullet leave a copper fouling in barrel that lead will sticks to it and kills accuracy in cast bullets and causing leading and should not be shot in same gun for max accuracy . Removing copper fouling is super hard to remove from barrel . That is why I have lead shooter ONLY guns . My Glocks I have 2 barrels . The Lone Wolf barrels are for cast bullets only and will never see a copper coat or jacket bullets shot in them EVER .

makes perfect sense to me .... BUT in my real world its not practical much less possible .... the only firearms I have in which I can change barrels are shotguns and I can't get permission from my higher authority :? to approve the purchase of a second Henry 45-70 so I'd have one for jacketed and the other for lead ammo .... the same is true for our Henry 44 mag/357 mag or our Ruger Redhawk 44 mag .... consequently I end up firing lead most of the time but jacketed some of the time .... if/when I should have an opportunity to hunt with any of them, I anticipate that would change ... down the road when I run out of the thousands of lead bullets we have on hand I might consider something like Coated Rifle Bullets bullets made by Missouri Bullet Company .... http://missouribullet.com/results.php?p ... condary=36 .... don't know if that would reduce the issues of mixing jacketed and non-jacketed

This is not a perfect world and mixing leaded and jacket is not a sin . All I can tell people why you shouldn't mix them . 90% of the shoot don't do serous target shooting like me . A leaded up barrel can cost you many point or cause miss in a leaded up gun . Plus I hate cleaning lead out of a barrel . Below is a pic of a barrel with 400 round of cast shot in it one day . Only burnt lube in barrel and I wiped it out with 1 pass of a wet patch and 2 dry ones .

I'm certain that I fall in the 90% ... while I have often fired 400 or more rounds during a day at the range, they are usually spread between two or more firearms .... from here out, its most probable that our Henry 44 will fire very few, if any jacketed bullets .... It will be used for paper punching and if hunting trips arise, we will take the 45-70 .... as we have discussed in a different thread http://henryrifleforums.com/viewtopic.p ... ad+remover I use a Lewis Lead Remover to handle any lead buildup in the barrel .... I find it to be easy to use and very effective

If removing lead barrel don't bother you and you are happy with doing that way . Please continue . I was just letting other people know I NEVER have leading in my rifle and pistol . The only jacket bullets I shoot is in my hunting rifles and my CCW with jacket HP . 99% of my all shooting is cast bullet . The target below is a test fire target after putting new sights , stainless guide rod and 17 lbs recoil spring .

nice pattern .... firing lead bullets is relatively new to me .... as noted, until getting our Henry 44 and 45-70 I only fired jacketed bullets .... I still have much to learn and your assistance is much appreciated

I wouldn't be interested much in a 525gr bullet in a .45-70 (if I had one), but Hickock45 shoots 500gr loads out of his. The cases are filled with black powder and the pressure is low. I've always wanted a .45-70 since I was a teenager. I'd really love a Uberti reproduction of the Winchester 1885 High Wall. But, I'd be happy with 300 to 405gr bullets at low velocity for plinking. And, anything I would hunt could be easily taken with a slow moving 300gr. If I go hunting this year, it will be for hogs with my Big Boy in .44 and 200gr hard cast bullets at about 1250fps.

realistically, my interest in 500 gr loads is just having a few to have a few .... I think they would be great conversation pieces .. :D

This was 1000 yd cast bullet shooter I built . I use a 400 gr bullet I make .

This cartridge was use in Civil War for a sniper rifle . The thin head was the original and the thick head 2 gen. The 3rd gen is modern using 30-40 Krag brass

I've been loading very low recoil rounds for my 45/70 for about a year now. 300, 350, 405 grain. They all shoot fine and are a blast to shoot. 405 gr over black powder at around 1,200 fps pretty much finished off the buffalo. Not much different from 12 grains of Unique.

Reading this thread makes me want to get into reloading more than ever - especially with 45-70 - seems like you can load it from mild to wild. Looks like a lot of fun...

the only long gun I will load with black powder is our Thompson Center Hawken .... no way I'll use it in any of our Henry rifles .... as best I can tell I plan to load and keep 4 levels of 45-70 on hand .... since almost all of our shooting will be paper punching .... for that I plan to find a build a load using the cheapest lead bullet that works well in our Henry out to 100 +/- yards .... I don't care the weight, the cheapest that works the best is my criteria for paper punching and I plan to keep hundreds on hand .... the second will be a round for hunting Deer, Boar, and/or Black Bear at ranges less than 200 yards .... the bullet for that load will be Nosler's 300 gr BST .... I can't envision the need to keep 50 or so on hand .... the third would be a stronger hunting load built around a 405 grain lead bullet .... here again 50 or so on hand .... the 4th group would be built around a 500 or larger grain bullet (if I could find one) .... basically I will do this and keep 50 or so on hand just to have them .... I wish that down the line I would be able to hunt game that would require such ammo but I have no illusions that will ever happen

I'd like to load a few Black Powder cartridges. Just to try REAL BP loads. But don't want to clean the mess from my Henry. So I doubt that will happen.

Maybe if I buy a single shot. A friend loads BP cartridges in 45 colt. He uses them in a conversion cylinder for his Ruger Old Army.

Most of my loads so far for the 45/70 are probably close to BP power levels.

I shot BP matches all over the USA and Germany and I found Windex is great for cleaning guns at the range and leave the mess there and spray WD40 on guns for Water Displacement not lube . Dry gun and coat with a light film oil . Auto transmission work good as a cleaner and lube for short term storeage .
