New Smith and Wessons with no lock

I happened to see information about S & W introducing some classic guns with no lock. I have just seen a video for three new guns from them. A model 36, a model 10 and a model 19. All with no lock. The 10 and 36 have rounded front sites. The model 19 looked like they used to, so, we will see. I'm happy to see this change at S & W.

Sounds a lot like what happened with the Series 80 1911s. After Springfield started selling more of their 1911s that did not have the extra firing pin block parts, the industry started swinging back in that direction again.
Let's cross our fingers that this is the first wave of a similar trend.

Similar to the 36, there is a 642 no lock.

Oddly I don't remember the Clinton ban as portrayed that severe. Probably just me. I wasn't much into semi-autos back then.

I remember it as a solid S&W fan of old. It almost killed the brand. I have a few, but don't care for them as much. And some of them are great revolvers.

This morning, I see that two versions of the Mountain Gun are coming back, with no lock. Very nice.

I will admit that I have owned several S&W revolvers with the lock and have never had a problem with them. Rumors are that the lock can engage itself making the gun inoperable and if you didn’t have the key with you no more shooting. Just in case I always carried a key in my range bag. My biggest gripe was with the law itself.

A further look on the S&W and Lipsey's site shows a few more classic named revolvers without locks. Things are definitely looking up.

Then there are those who disassembled the gun and removed the hammer locking piece.

I haven't thought much about locks or no locks. I guess that I am not a revolver loyalist. I do like a somewhat classic look. Yet, I don't mind a modern twist. I have a 1991 S&W 65 without a lock and a 2020 S&W 360 with a lock. Both shoot fine, and I like them both. Haven't had a lock issue yet. But, I will keep an eye out for such a thing.

My 617 and 686 revolvers that I bought last year both look like they have locks but my gunsmith took the locks out when he tuned them. It does make a world of difference. Glad to see these new models released. Hopefully they will be of good quality and not a bunch of them returning for customer service.

I certainly don't need another .357 revolver but that 686 Mountain Gun kinda calls out to me. Not sure about the 7 shot cylinder though. I'd have to re-program my weary old brain into a ..."There's one more in there"...mode.

I never had a problem with the lock, either, and I even had a 460 mag with the lock. I think S&W may be feeling the all the sales they have lost over the years because of the lock, though. About time they addressed it.

I have a model 64 that I love, it was issued to me out of the academy. When we switched over I bought it from the department. I'm pretty sure it's basically a stainless model 10.

I also saw a video where the models will not have the two piece barrel either.

The barrels will be back to cut rifling instead of the EDM process they have been using recently. I think that will be a big plus for cast bullet shooters.
