I like coyotes and wolves. The coyotes eat a lot of mice. The wolves kill a lot of deer but since they were reintroduced the wasting disease has gone way down. Hunters don’t like hearing that as there are less deer but the ones remaining are far more healthy.
I agree 110% with you Señor Henry! I have no time for people who shoot coyotes and wolves for “no reason”. They play an important role in the balance of nature, which government has done a monumentally horrible job of screwing up. Coyotes also have been proven to alter their breeding cycles in direct comparison with their populations. Shoot more, and they breed more. It’s an effort in futility.

Absolutely zero disrespect meant RP, but to quote the Chilies “True men don’t kill coyotes”. If they are killing your livestock, then ok. I get it. But just shooting one because you see it is misguided at best.

My father-in-law moved to Ephrata, WA right after WWII. Being in a rocky desert location there were rattlesnakes everywhere. On Saturdays he and his neighbor would go out shooting them with a 22 pistol. On a good day they could kill 100 each. They did this week after week, year after year which lasted a couple decades. In the course of time they killed them all. I’ve walked the rock outcrops and it’s rare to find one while at one time I could have found hundreds.

That’s progress and civilization.

We have the wasting disease here in our woods and the DNR is eradicating our deer herd. We rarely see a deer any more. I suppose wolves would help but this is a farming community and I doubt the farmers want that. There are a lot of dairy cattle and horse farms.
As for coyotes, well, they are way too numerous here and have decimated the Pheasant and Turkey populations. They stray into the urban areas now and prey on cats and small dogs, so the DNR says if you see one, shoot it.

I haven't shot any but I have neighbors who do. We have a den of foxes that we watch every Winter and enjoy so I hope no one shoots any of them.

None taken, Sir. I know how they prey on the young calves in the spring, real experience here.
I also have a couple neighbors with chickens that lose a few every year to them and an occasional fox.
I don't bother the foxes, but I have a great dislike of the yotes.
I've also read about their breeding efforts.
The owner of the farm next door that I have permission to play and hunt on has told me on several occasions that if I see one to shot the B@$$***'s.
Truth be be known I haven't shot one in a few years now, I did miss one a couple deer seasons ago one morning though.
The scope was off quite a bit as I checked when I got home later, I was not happy about the miss, but was glad to find the scope out, while poking at the yotes vs missing a nice buck. ;) That would've been the first blood for the 41 BBS, and it still hasn't drawn any.

There are definitely circumstances where a sudden case of lead poisoning are called for. My neighbors up the road have more problems than we do, I’ve never seen a yote on our property, but plenty of bears, cougars and a wolf have been spotted in the past year. My wife and I have talked about chickens, goats and donkeys, but so far have held off. We don’t need anymore things enticing predators onto our property.

I can remember the coyote fur rage in the 79’s when they were worth $100 and more. That was a lot of money back then and I hunted coyotes in the winter for their fur. Nowadays I’m content just looking at them. If I had livestock I would think different and not hesitate to shoot one.

Probably not the bears, cougars or wolves, but the coyotes won't stand a chance with the donkeys as they hate them with a passion and will stomped the life out of them. A lot of folks will add a donkey or two in with the cows for protection.
The neighboring farm when they had cows here had one and it didn't even like dogs.
It put my dog under the truck a couple of times as it was the only safe place when it was near.

Wisconsin is considering Sandhill Crane hunting. I’m not seeing excess cranes in this area. I hunted them last fall in Alaska where there where thousands of them migrating through. Here the few I see are nesting as it’s not a huge migratory route. My property would be ideal crane hunting if there where enough of them. I don’t think I would allow crane hunting on my property. I currently won’t allow wolf or coyote. Now deer are a different story. My property isn’t all that great for the actual hunting but it is for getting access to the good hunting area. I allow a few neighbors access to cross my property. But they are the people that plow my driveway. I don’t allow city people hunting permission.

People here are territorial. You do what you want on your land and I dictate what is done on my land. Then you might sit next to them in Church on Sunday and be friends.

The farmer that hays my field doesn’t want me to shoot bow in the fields. One lost arrow can damage his equipment.I don’t get paid for the hay but save taxes. Farm property is barely taxed. Recreational property has a high tax.

I remember that Gene, I was working at a wholesale gun supplier and we couldn’t keep 22 caliber bullets in stock. Everybody was hunting them for the cash the pelts brought.
