New Gun Cart

Post by chuckcook » Sun Sep 17, 2017 3:37 pm

I've been building a gun cart for my SASS NWMP Mountie persona all week. I wanted to go with a cart that is unique and fitting for a Mountie. I tried my hand at steaming and bending wood. That was easier than I expected. Covered the wood side panels with canvas, then ironed on the NWMP logo decals. Still working on adding 3 wooden boxes for supplies and equipment. 2 boxes in the bed and the other box will fit in a cradle on the rails behind the seat. After the boxes are in place, I'll build the gun rack. I originally planned on adding 4 wheels inside the rails. As of now, the sled glides easily over grass, gravel, and concrete. After it's loaded that might change, causing it to become uncomfortable to pull. If that's the case, I'll add the wheels after I've used it in the field a few times.

Looks good. Great attention to detail.
I have been invited to join the Steele Scouts here in Alberta. They go back to the NWMP as well and were a militia cavalry troop. The troop does lots of parades and is a part of the Calgary Stampede each year as well. Thinking about it, might attend their meeting in January and discuss with them.

RR, Thanks, I'm trying to do my portrayal with honor and respect to the NWMP, RNWMP, and RCMP. Joining the Steele Scouts sounds like an honor. I probably would not have to think hard on it. :)

I love your sled . I made my cart to hold 3 long guns and 2 pistol in holster attached cart . The box on the bottom hold a ton or ammo and also works as a seat . The wheels are push button on and off . I made that around 20 years ago for SASS matches to move to different stages .The big wheels roll over every easy .

I sure hope it slides okay when loaded because it has classic lines to it.

I real love your uniform . If you decide to do Cowboy action shooting that would make a SUPER SASS or CAS uniform and with your sled I think you would 1st prize for best dressed ...

You could put wheels on it like mine to pop on or off in 5 seconds if you need wheels to keep your sled outstanding look...

Great idea about removing the wheels.

Hi Gunrunner, Thanks! When I originally decided to build a dog sled gun cart, I planned on putting wheels between the runners. Depending on how easily it moves and pulls will determine if I need wheels. I'm going to field test it at a few events, then decide. I like your idea on removable wheels.

I've been a SASS member since 1996.

Very nice cart. Great persona outfit too. I think the wheels will need to go on as weight increases.

I like tgr's cart too.

Any interest in a SASS section on the forum?

I have always wished I could join and participate, but this is as close as I got. No time for participation.

I was at the taping of the show that Harper Creigh was featured on at Gun Gurus. He is a class gentleman. The other man was the curator of a museum, I think at Springfield Armory.

The wheels might need to go on. I'll know for sure after field testing. If I had my druthers, I would really like to go with no wheels.

I don't know how many SASS shooter are on this site.

I know Phil Schreier, he is the Senior Curator at the NRA Museums.

I was the man behind the camera. Phil is on the right, Jim Supica is on the left, Harper Creigh and the fellow from the museum who's name escapes me.
