High pucker factor

Had a good day in the shop yesterday, spending the holiday cutting the ends for the sewing chest. The pucker factor WAS high. Mess this up, and I would be starting again with making that portion over and good luck finding THAT nice a grain pattern. To reduce the chance of a failure, I first drew a template on cardboard. Then, I taped the two panels with the A sides facing one another using blue painters tape. I CAREFULLY aligned the center joint lines.

Once they were taped together, I transferred the cutting pattern to the top panel and slowly and carefully cut the pattern on the table saw, being careful to hold my tongue right, and cut outside the line slightly. I eased up to the line on the belt sander after I was done. After each pass on the table saw, I retaped that side before starting on the next cut to avoid the panels shifting.

Both panels were then separated and they turned out pretty well. They don't have to be perfect, but I needed them to look good. I want the boss to gasp when it's done.

The side panels have also been carefully trimmed, and pinned and glued, so they are pretty much done. I may roll the edges of those rails after I get farther along. Next up in the process will be the top rail and the top doors. Walnut will be the wood choices. As highly figured as I can find.

Every piece will still need sanding and finishing before assembly begins... the small faults you may see will go away during that process. (hopefully.... )

Very nice book matching. A well planned and assembled book match is always impressive. Good job.

Ever try a 4 way bookmatch? This was very popular back in the 1700/1800's for furniture.
