Diet Time

Post by BrokenolMarine » Fri May 10, 2019 1:16 pm

Ever look in the mirror... And wonder who that is looking back? ;)
I weighed 165 when I graduated from bootcamp at Parris Island. That was a long time ago.
I stayed between 180 - 190 for my 13+ years in the Corps, unless I was recovering from surgery...
During my time working patrol... 210 - 220... But I had a 52" chest and 40" waist.
I step on the scale these days, it cries "One at a time please!" :o ( 270 )

I could whine and make excuses:
Hard to exercise
Wheelchair
Pain levels
Injuries
Health issues.

The three main health issues? A two, a seven, and a zero.
I went to the program the VA offers on Tuesday, and wasn't too impressed at the presentation, but the handout had some good info.
If you want to lose weight quickly, but in a healthy manner, eat whatever you want from a healthy menu, but no more than 1,500 calories per day. You can cheat a bit once a week. (A SLICE of cake and ONE scoop of ice cream. NOT a cake and a tub of ice cream.)

They want you to come in 2x a week for a month, once a week for the following month, then once a month til you die for maintenance.
I live ninety minutes away. But.... :) ... They have a phone program. I am going to try that. Miss T and I are started a 1,500 calorie diet a couple days ago, and it's not that hard. It sux, but not that hard. Just have to make smart choices and have a bit (lot) of will power.

My goal? 220. I'd like to see 200. Short term... Make 240. :P. Wish me luck... Anyone else wanna tag along, make it a group effort?

Here is a shot of a brokenolmarine taken this morning at 270... Day 2 of the diet.
Let's see if a few months make a difference. :D

Its tough for sure but I lost most of mine doing what they call the lean and green. Stay away from Beef and pork. Chicken Turkey and for the red I did buffalo. I now don't eat much beef I like buffalo so much better. Not sure if you like berries. But the berries family is great for you and will curb that ice cream and cake fondness.

I wish you luck my friend. It's a hard thing to lose substantial weight. Your 1500 calorie diet sounds pretty good for a way to go. I know you will meet your goal.

Hang in there and do well. I'm pulling for you and Miss Tina.

I hope your journey pays off Jim. Would definitely tag along if the need was there.I hear it helps to have support along the way.
Fortunately, I have never had a weight problem. My Mom is very heavy at 87, but my Dad of the same age, is tall and thin. Must have gotten most of my genes from him. Have ranged from about 175 lbs to my current 190 for approx the last thirty years.
Currently 6' tall. I HAVE shrunk about 1/2" and shoe size has increased, as I think is normal, approaching 65.
Am able to eat pretty much Whatever I want short of a lot of dairy, ( lactose intolerance ).
Guess I've been somewhat blessed so far...or, maybe I have a pet Tape Worm that I'm un-aware of... ;)
Anyway, hope the trend continues and I DO wish you much success to achieve your goal.
Who knows what the future holds for us all... :)

No problem. Created an excel spreadsheet to track intake, and have stayed within the goal and well under most days. By writing down what I eat, I'm not likely to eat junk, which I wasn't doing too often. What I was doing, was two fers. Two fer me. :D
Miss T would say she was going to make hamburgers for lunch, and ask if it sounded okay.

I'd reply with, "Make two for me." 8-)

I decided to change what I was doing when I found out that loosing 10lbs can lower my changes for diabetes from 90% to 10%. The main change that I made was eating a Caesar salad for lunch with Balsamic Vinaigrette lite dressing. That was in 2014. I lost about 20lbs within the firs year and have been able to maintain it off. I also keep sodas and sweets to a very minimal with very little beef and more fish and turkey. The first 3-4 months were rough. Now, it is second nature. I do treat myself from time to time. But, I try not to eat more than I can burn off within a day.

Update:

It's been a month. The scale I was using was off by a few pounds, so my starting weight was more like 275+. The VA sent a loaner scale that transmits my weigh-ins to the RN running their "program" every day. I control my diet and choose when to weigh in.

I weighed 262 yesterday. The 1500 calories per day hasn't been that hard, Miss T and I have just had to change our mindset, and modify habits. We rarely eat out any longer, if we do, we don't supersize. :( We don't buy junk food, so there are no temptations. (Although you should splurge once in a while.) Last week, Miss T bought us each a chocolate bar, the first for either of us since we started. It was good, but I didnt rob a hershey's truck afterward.

Will keep at it. Would like to hit 200 again.

Thanks Tom,

Yeah, there are things I miss, but the "pre diabetes" blood test result a few months ago was enough motivation to get me going. ;) That disease runs on both sides of the family and that is one portion of the gene pool I don't intend to dive into if I can help it. Losing about seventy pounds will also help my knees, back, and hopefully reduce the pain in that reconstructed right femur. If nothing else, it will be heart healthy.

13 pounds in a month is really good, keep it up, should help that your wife is on board as well.

She is doing a pretty good job too. She has lost about ten or twelve pounds as well. Because it's a lifestyle change and not a denial diet, it's a lot easier.
261.4 this morning. Can't wait to see the scale break into the 250s. :D
My Goal is the 220s, but I would like to see 200 again. Maybe not, but we can dream. :P

Good luck to ya. 2 years ago when the scale showed me 234 I decided it was time for a change. I dropped sodas cold turkey which I found were causing me internal problems. I was always told sodas were the key to weight gain and as soon as you stopped the pounds would start to disappear. At the same time I went from 3+ meals a day plus snacks to eating one very limited meal a day in the afternoon. I'm working physically harder now than much younger men can stand. Long story short, I've since gained 6 pounds. Talked to my doctor recently and ask him for an explanation to which he replied "Genetics are a bitch aren't they?" I will tell you, I feel better now than I did then. Weight loss just doesn't seem to be in the cards no matter what I do. I spent 2 months last year in Colorado helping a relative and nobody there could believe I did the things I did and hardly ever ate. Hopefully you're not in the same boat as me and things go the way you want. I'm envious of your success. Again, good luck to ya.
