Yea an episode of 'Bizzare Foods With Andrew Zimmern' had him on a guided hunt for them - and they cooked them up later for a Cajun style BBQ!

Looks like they had better success with the grabber and big stick than the .22. A .22 isn't all that effective for a one-shot kill.

Nutria Spaghetti Casserole - Chef Philippe Parola

Serves 8 to 10
Ingredients

1 cup celery, chopped
1 stick butter or margarine
1 clove garlic
1 (16 oz.) can tomatoes
3 med. onions, minced
1 (16 oz.) pkg. thin spaghetti
2 bell peppers, minced
½ cup cheddar cheese, grated
1½ lb. nutria
1 jalapeno pepper, diced
1 teaspoon salt, pepper, garlic powder

To Assemble:

Precook nutria in enough water to make 2 quarts of stock. Sauté vegetables in butter. Add 1 quart stock and tomatoes and simmer for 1 hour. Chop meat into small pieces. Mix with sauce and put in casserole. Put cooked, drained spaghetti (cooked in remaining nutria stock) into sauce and nutria. Mix well. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, seasoning to taste. Bake 40 minutes at 350 degrees. Sprinkle with grated cheese and jalapeno peppers. Bake for about 20 minutes more. Freezes well.

Judging by their name, they should be quite nutritious.

ugh, no I don't eat them. I leave them for the coyotes, hawks, owls and/or raccoons. Whomever gets to the carcass first.

Chef Philippe Parola can cook up all the nutria he wants but I AIN'T EATIN' ONE. Besides, anything can be made tasty with a honey mustard brown sugar glaze then roasted on an open pit. Doesn't mean I'm puttin' it MY mouth. Not to denigrate another Chef but YIKES, what we come up with sometimes!!

I eat squirrel, why not nutria? It's supposed to be quite good.

I'll bet they are there and you haven't noticed. They can be very shy and stealthy. Supposedly they are present in the coastal plain of NC and SC. Find a rural stream with grassy banks and quietly observe. They swim very low/flush in the water almost unnoticed.

Well, in all honesty, I have heard of unconfirmed reports of sightings here. It wouldn't surprise me if there were a few around. They are definitely not here in any numbers. I have spent a lot of time in the rivers and creeks in my area and have never seen one.

SC division of natural resources claims they aren't here yet, but will likely be here soon.

I have seen them in Eastern NC and Virginia. I cannot find the photos but I took one with my 32 spl a while back. they show up on my game cameras from tiem to time. But with all the bobcats, coyotes, wolves, and bears I don't think they stand a chance around here.

Maybe. However the nutria are very fast in water, skittish and very aware of their surroundings. Take a lot for a predator to sneak up on one and actually catch it. When I shoot them it's necessary from some distance as they will bolt if you get even moderately close. For every one spotted on a trail cam there are likely 100 more not seen. They are very prolific so losses due to preditors are probably insignificant.

They are definitely here in VA, we have seen them in the farm ponds at the Black Angus farm we fish... where they have done significant damage to the bank structure with their intricate tunnel systems. They are also at one of the major reservoirs we fish... Same deal. Tunnels.
