Hike Report: West Tiger #3 Summit

Post by Sir Henry » Thu May 19, 2016 11:05 pm

Thursdays I go hiking rain or shine and today it was pouring down rain. Here is the gang. Left to right: Tom our leader, Claudia who just got back from Arizona for the winter, Susan who I've never met before, a couple who I've only hiked one time with, and Sung.
Image

As usual Tom starts out in the lead. Claudia and Susan talk and catch up on things as they hadn't seen each other since last fall.
Image

But quickly Sung and I pass everyone.
Image

As usual Sung is in the lead by the halfway mark.
Image

With the rain it was cold and wet at the top and nothing to see. Sung and I were on our way down when we ran into the others. We agreed to take different routes back to the bus and would meet there.
Image

We took another trail back which made us climb back up a few hundred feet. In all we hiked just shy of eight miles and gained almost 2,500 feet. The high point was 2,522 and we started at 500 but had ups and downs.

You can't really tell in this picture but we are looking up at about a 45 degree angle. Yes it was steep. The log in the bottom is also seen from a different angle in the next two sets of pictures.

Sung and I were back more than an hour when Claudia and Susan arrived. Then the other showed up ten minutes later. I thought we did great for a spring warmup hike. Last year the group was going only twice a month but I talked a few into going every week. Then by August we were hiking twice a week. Sung and I talked about it while hiking and we want to push the group harder. There is a Tuesday group for those that can't keep up and they let it known they don't like pushy people on their hikes. So we are telling a few to either keep up or go on Tuesday.

I picked the first hike of the year, Tom picked this one and Sung will pick the next one. We rotate between a select few who picks the hikes and then nominate the next person. In this way we keep the hikes going where we want them to go. We do have a couple others that are more hard core like us but they were either out of town or out of the country.

You certainly have some beautiful country out yor way. Those are some very tall trees compared to what we have in my neck of the woods. Sung sounds like a real fun lady to hike with.

We have a few women that like to go on tougher hikes. Most of the guys our age can't keep up so if you are a guy and can do the tougher hikes you always have women that want to go along.

Everything is covered in moss.

We ran across these ferns today. They are different than the normal ones we see.

Gene, for some reason this image popped into my head. I think it suits you in your hiking.

Beautiful story and photographs, SH. The trees and moss and ferns there are other worldly compared with the most exotic landscapes here in CT. Thanks for sharing the splendor of your adventures with those of us that will never again see them in person.

My lawn tractor's transmission failed (it's 18 years old; time for a new one), so this week I hiked, too -- behind my 22" walking lawn mower. I swear the grass and weeds were as tall as the trees on West Tiger #3! It took me about 90 minutes and I was in some pretty severe pain when I finished. But, I finished! Sorry. No pics.

I may just mow with the push mower just to get the exercise. Not sure where next week's hike is going to be.

I somehow missed this post. Great photos. Good trails to ride a horse on and avoid the walking part...
Very beautiful.

Its not much fun hiking on horse trails. For the most part they keep them separate. But they do have lots of them for both.

Wonderful pictures Sir Henry, hiking is great exercise, I need to do more of it. My wife, kids and I are in the process of moving and in doing so will be closer to areas that I can hike again and closer to excellent turkey and deer hunting. That is some beautiful country you live in.

It must be your turn to lead. Please post photos. They're always fun. Have fun browsing in the gun store, too.

Curious, SH. On your hiking journeys in WA State, do you ever see Scotch Broom plants? I know when I lived in OR they were abundant along hillsides. They don't grow here in MO, and I had never seen them until I moved to the Northwest.

I remember traveling some winding OR roads, coming around a curve, and with the sun shining on a hillside the splash of yellow color was astonishing to see! (The second picture is like those views). We often saw a lot of this plant as we traveled wooded highways from inland to the coast. This is what they look like.

The Pacific Northwest is sure a beautiful part of our country!

Thanks for sharing. I used to hike and backpack a lot. But it's been a while. Both knees are bone on bone. I still walk a bit and do the big hill on my property. But I have to do it in small or easy doses. One thing I miss about work since I retired (probably the only thing except the money) is my twice daily walk. Since 2001 I was in a location that sat on a 30 acre lot. We used to do a morning and afternoon walk every day. A couple of laps. Ended up being a couple of miles a day rain, snow, or shine normally.

I used to be a long distance cyclist for many years. Both on and off road. Still have several bikes. We have been locked into almost daily rain for a month here. Today was beautiful. If the weather holds I'll be on the bike tomorrow. I can ride or walk a bit. Just have to balance out effort vs distance. I can do moderate amounts of either but rarely both.

It keeps you young and fit!
