Re: RanchRoper's Reloading Ruminations
I've loaded a lot of lead, a lot of plated, and a lot of coated. I've loaded very few jacketed pistol caliber bullets. Each have their strong points and weak points.
Lead is cheap, and has excellent accuracy in lots of guns. They can cause a build up of lube in dies, and smoke a lot at the range.
Plated is very clean, more expensive than lead, and make great looking rounds. Finding data specifically for plated can be a challenge, and they are more prone to sticking one in the barrel, if underpowered.
Coated has much of the best of both worlds. They are a little more expensive than lead, very clean to load and shoot, and data and performance are the same as lead. Some manufacturers have better applied coatings than others. They are not the prettiest of rounds. Some are downright ugly, but shoot well.

The Fiocchi LFN rounds I have are coated with something. Lead is almost black and feels waxy. Shoots good.

Re: RanchRoper's Reloading Ruminations
Ahh, that would be it. Nice ammo.
Just added a blue bin for clean brass to load, and lined the little red one with foam to put primers when loading. Took off the plastic safety prime thing, it bugged me. 1 primer at a time and will put it in the cup myself.
I am going to prime a brass case next week and fire it in my pistol. That way I will know what to expect for volume if one evers goes off in the house.

Re: RanchRoper's Reloading Ruminations
I load using the Dillon 550 press and found that using the RCBS hand primer works very well and smoothes out the loading process for me
by taking that step off the press. Sometimes I would get a primer to go in sideways or maybe a jam in the feeding. Plus I didn't care for my
head to be near a 100 primers stacked in a tube if something happened.
Give one of those hand prim tools a try!
My reloading steps are.... Knock out spent primers on an old RCBS single stage press. Clean the brass in tumbler.
Primer clean brass with hand primer. Then run thru the Dillon 550B for the loading.

The gun will insulate the noise quite a bit. That way I will know what to expect for volume if one evers goes off in the house.
It will give you an idea but they are about twice as loud going off in the press however do not think this is common - it is rare and some never experience it. Just one for me in over 40 years.

Concerning primers - All I know is that the wife will never vacuum up the reloading room floor, AGAIN.

we also use a RCBS® Hand Priming Tool ====> https://www.cabelas.com/product/RCBS-re ... s?slotId=1 .... it performs as advertised .... I've never heard of a primer detonation with an RCBS or Hornady press and do admit to hearing it can be an issue for Dillon .... they make a really good press

Well I'm going for the record, 40 years with no issues, after that I'm 102, using a peep sight and scaling things back a little.

interesting .... any clue as to the cause .... did it ignite any others in the tube

Re: RanchRoper's Reloading Ruminations
No, and it can’t really as during the actual seating of the primer the spring loaded primer arm is locked forward in the groove on the ram while the primer is being seated and primer detonation will be directed up through the case.did it ignite any others in the tube
The remaining primers are in the tube and separated from the one being seated and not in proximity to the ‘blast’ from the one that detonates.
If I recall it was a tight primer pocket in the case and I was exerting more pressure than what was normal and the compression is what set it off. Kind of odd as it did not have any ‘impact’ just excessive pressure on the ram.
