"Bargain Hunting" a 3-9X40

Post by ESquared » Sat Mar 23, 2019 7:02 pm

I've had good luck with the Leo VX-Freedoms, but I'm scouting for a bargain 3-9X40, which has led me to look at Nikons.

Natchez has a big sale going on, but my knowledge of Nikons (other than their camera gear, which I have quite a bit of) is limited. LIke most of these manufacturers, models come and go, so it's kinda mind-numbing. Any reason not to consider "Refurbished"?

Does anyone have any opinions on these? I filtered for $150-$200.

So sorry. Here's a better-filtered look. Dropped down to $125-$200 and re-filtered for 3-9X40.

This one looks like the biggest mark-down, but that's not always a good indicator. Often, quite the opposite. For more background, it could go on my 30-30 or my BBB 45 Colt or the 223 SS that I'm stalking. Don't want to spend my time swapping out and zeroing scopes (although I wouldn't mind getting good at it).

That's quite a sale.

Yes, seems like it, but "lowest price" doesn't necessarily mean "greatest value," nor does the biggest mark-down. And, since I have no Nikon background knowledge, I turned to this group.

I'll get some advice sooner or later...

I don't own a Nikon yet. But I will.

I own 3 or 4 of them, some I've had for several years.
I would buy another with no hesitation.

Actually was looking at one in 1x4 for my shorty 35,
just a week or so ago and stumbled upon on a Leupold for about $75 cheaper so that's what I got this time.

I have no personal experience with that particular model.
But will say this, if you don't like it.
I'll buy it off of ya.
Think it would work well on something I have around here.

Ya know what? Why wouldn't I just get a Nikon Buckmaster II for about $100 from Amazon or Ebay? My needs are simple.

Seems to me they sell more refurbished scopes than actual new ones.

Every time I buy a scope other than a Leupold, some time down the line I wish I had bought a Leupold instead....

I have 3 Nikon scopes, a Monarch 1.5 x 4.5 with a 3 P #4 reticle, a Turkey model with that specific reticle, and a fixed 4X Monarch Plex. All have been fine for what I got them for, particularly the first two's reticles, but, for anything else, I'm with tractortad. The Leupolds always seem to be just a little bit better, every time :) .

Well, that puts me on the horns of a dilemma, huh? I hear the Leupold comments; heck I have three of 'em. But now Mark pops up with a brand new Buckmaster II. Be careful what you wish for, huh? Gotta think about this one.

Understand Evan.
Don't have to sell it. I know you will make your decision on what you feel comfortable with. I wish you good luck with whatever you end up with!
