Just curious. Interested to see what you think of it.

I emailed Henry and inquired whether it would also handle 5.56. They told me no, it is only capable of handling .223. That kind of dampened my desire for one as I have a Ruger American Ranch that will shoot both and most of my ammo stock is 5.56. Of course, I could always stock up on .223 and just shoot it in both. Just wish they had made it a little more flexible.

That kind of dampened my desire for one as I have a Ruger American Ranch that will shoot both and most of my ammo stock is 5.56. Of course, I could always stock up on .223 and just shoot it in both. Just wish they had made it a little more flexible.

I know what you mean. With all my AR's I have a ton of 5.56 but only a couple hundred rounds of .223. I need to start buying.

If you reload the .223 is the same brass as 5.56 ammo would not be a problem. I use scrounged 5.56 all the time in the .223.

Still, it is a Henry lever rifle in .223. If I start hearing good reports about them, it will probably rekindle the fire for having one. Shoot, what am I thinking, it will DEFINITELY light a bonfire and I will absolutely need one!

Good point. I do not reload .223 at this time, but that would probably be the motivation to start. Guess what I better do is start saving money. I'm going to need it.

In general, .223 is considered more accurate than 5.56. The word on the street is that the closer tolerances with less bullet jump is one of the main reasons. If you are looking for accuracy in this general caliber, then .223 would be my choice. If you are just looking to put lead downrange, then 5.56 would be the recommendation. Not that a 5.56 semi auto cannot be made to be quite accurate. A bolt action .223 already has many advantages out of the box. The Long Ranger would be analogous to a bolt action for this comparison.

Of course, if you are looking for extreme accuracy, the .243 would probably be a better choice. Good luck on cheap ammo for that, though. Again, if you are looking for extreme accuracy, then cheap ammo is not the droid you're looking for.

The nice thing about reloading is you can have extremely accurate ammo at much lower prices than factory stuff.

I collected military surplus firearms from WWI and WWII. Then I started collecting AR's in milspec which meant 5.56NATO and I reloaded for it. I'm not sure what .223 I have anymore.

Once you start reloading you can taylor a load to your rifle or handgun for that matter, you can find just what it wants & shoots the most accuratly
Most accuratly is usually about in the middle of the data too.
