Taylor's and Company Cattleman 22LR

I took my new Taylor's and Company Uberti Cattleman 22LR (which they call The Ranch Hand) to the range yesterday and shot about 60 rounds at 25 feet, one handed, standing.

After about thirty rounds, I had a problem. The action locked up so that I couldn't move the hammer, and therefore, couldn't move the cylinder. It was totally frozen. I suspected a round had not fully seated in the chamber and was getting caught, so I pointed the gun downward and slapped the cylinder with my hand a half dozen times until it finally freed up. No problems after that.

When I got home and broke it down to clean it, I realized the cylinder has counter sunk chambers for the rim of the 22s to drop into so that the cartridges become flush with the surface of the cylinder. Apparently one of them didn't drop all the way in and that caused the problem. Now that I'm aware of it, I'll be certain to pay close attention. I telephoned PT7 later on and he checked his Uberti Stallion and it, too, has counter sunk chambers. I wonder if all of their 22s do.

Good point on the recessed chambers on some revolvers. Keep them clean. It's happened to me, too.

That is one fine looking single action, by the way and love that you were shooting one hand. Nice work.

I think Paige just likes the smell of Ballistol, but she generally approves of pretty much everything anyway-- with the exception of the application of her monthly flea/tick/heartworm medication and the vacuum cleaner!

My .45LC Taurus locks up sometimes. In my situation the spent cases were backing out of the cylinder recess's under recoil.

I think my 12 shot has the recessed cylinders to Stan. I will look at it when I get home right after I pour that so much needed Friday night adult beverage. Glad you got to shoot it looks good I know I really like mine.

If your 12-shot has the same recessed chambers, Al, after shooting it takes a little more to clean them out. They easily collect ammo residue there. My BA derringer had the same on the barrels. Anyway, to clean these well, I regularly use a bunch of q-tips. They do a good job of cleaning those hard-to-get-to spots. With 12 chambers, you'll have double the fun!

I buy Hoppes #9 in the bigger containers. I have a pint Mason jar I fill full enough that it will cover a cylinder. I use it over and over. I will take the cylinder out and put it in that jar and let her soak most of the time overnight. There is usually minimal scrubbing and the black rings that are on the cylinder faces of the stainless cylinders will usually scrub right off with a nylon bristle gun brush that I get. Lead cloth also removes those black rings. I find this an easier solution to spending alot of time with over and over one hole at a time.
