The cost of motor oil.......

Post by fortyshooter » Wed Feb 06, 2019 11:56 am

Why is it with the price of a barrel of oil going down the cost of a quart of regular basic motor oil keeps going up?
I remember some years ago with the price of oil was jumping up the cost of motor oil went up a couple of bucks and it stayed there
when the cost of a barrel of crude went down. Folks said well give it time and motor oil will go down to reflect that....Nope!

I have my little hot rod Mustang that I change the oil in about twice a year and I use the Valvoline VR-1 non synthetic Race Oil 10W-30
since it has all the good additives and it's only 50 cent per qt. more than the base Valvoline 10-30.

Only one NAPA store in my area keeps it in stock and last time it was 6.69 per qt. I was shocked today to see it had jumped to 7.99 per qt. same as all the other oils!
Fiquring it was just NAPA's price, I also stopped by the local Advance Auto to pick up a Motorcraft FL-1 filter and was shocked again to see that had jumped up to 5.99 now and their oil was same price...7.49 for a basic qt. of oil!! Yeah I know they run specials like 5 qts. and a filter for 30 bucks but not usually the VR-1 Race Oils.
So today the oil change was $ 55 bucks

Maybe because folks don't need to have their oil changed as often with newer cars today the cost of oil has gone up??

I'm going to see if I can get it cheaper thru Amazon next time!

.
Amazon price on this is puzzling.
https://www.amazon.com/Valvoline-10W-30 ... oline&th=1

A case of 6 is listed as $23.99 ($4 per qt) yet the
individual buy for a qt is listed as $12.90.
I assume that individual qt pricing might be to encourage buying by the case.

LOL!!
I typically use a synthetic in my daily driver Tacoma and my Mustang. Regular price for a 5L/5qt jug of a major brand synthetic up here in Canada is ~$60. That's not even for a specialty oil like Redline or Amsoil...Needless to say, I stock up when it is on sale. Oh, and the price of gas is way down lately...to about $4 a gallon...for regular.

Just sayin'

The only thing I’ll buy at WallyWorld I’d oil. It’s about $24 for a 5 qt jug of Rotella 15-40. That’s CDN money too.

Fuel n BC is $4.20 per gallon and 1 mile from my house in Blaine Wa, I pay $2.70.
