Sighting In Two Henrys

PT7 and I met up at my indoor range today to sight in his 357 All Weather with his See All sight, as well as see if I could get my new 45 BBB Carbine closer to "acceptable" with its Skinner/Lyman globe set-up.

I'll let Bob speak for his outcome, but I'm more discouraged than before. My POIs were EvEN higher than my POAs were last Saturday, and I thought a little bit lower post on the Lyman globe would help, but it seems to have made it worse.

I think the sight is just too short @ .494" (Lyman 17AMI), so I may do some more research.

My target's not worth posting. Pretty put off/put out with this, as I've been so spoiled from my other Henry sight-in experiences. Guess it was my turn!

EDIT: Talked to Rob at Skinner and he did the math. The Lyman @ .494" is mathematically too low, which would result in my shots landing High by appx 6" vs. Pt of Aim.

His math says I need the Lyman globe @ .584" (Lyman 17AUG). Ordered the latter and will post the Lyman 17AMI on our Classifieds within the next couple of days. If interested, shoot me a PM. ($30, shipped).

You're right about a lower front sight making things worse. Anytime you lower a front sight, you raise the POI. Remember, with a front sight, things are just the opposite of a rear sight as to how the sight affects POI. If you're trying to lower your groups with a front sight, yes, go to a higher front sight. Don't get discouraged, though. We've all been through this, myself included. Just part of the learning experience. You can do it.

Thanks, NCG, for your words of wisdom and encouragement. The more I thought about it, especially after talking with Rob at Skinner, I determined the exact same thing. I was making things WORSE by trying what I was trying.

You are getting away with out to much damage. I recently bought a 375 Winchester. With the rear sight all the way down and Shooting a Sierra 200 gr bullet its shooting about the same. Yes with the stock sights that came on the gun. Im not sure what Im going to do. It also shot to the same point with a heavier bullet. Not to mention its also off about 4 inches to the right at 50 yards. Kind of discouraging with stock irons.

Take the factory rear sight insert out and with a small round file slot it down a bit. I also made mine slightly wider to be able to center the front
bead better on target. The V was so narrow I would loose the bead.
This worked so well on my new Carbine I'm going to do same on my Henry .22 pump.

I'm afraid that horse is out of the barn, as my factory rear sight got tapped out last week so I could install my Skinner Peep. My path pretty much has to be a taller front, which oughta be here tomorrow!

Got my taller Lyman globe installed and it just "feels" better already! To the range!
