I will let you know how it works.

Evan
If you were to obtain some 2400 it wouldnt go to waste. 2400 is an excellent powder for 357 41 44 and 45colt. Especially with the 158 grain bullet. I wouldnt give up on Unique either. I think I remember another member here using it in a 30-30. I use Universal Clays in 45-70 for a plinking load and its right there burn rate wise with Unique. The bearing surface on those 110's is small. You're gun may not like them. It may have nothing to do with powder choice. I have 2 Henry 45-70's The CCH has a load that worked very well. I tried the same load in the All Weather and it did not shoot it near as well. Every gun is different not very often you will find a load that works the same in 2 guns.

CHRONY! Nice! Thanks for keeping me posted. H110 was going to be my next move!

2400 does indeed work well in the .357/158gr JSP. Unique for my .45 Colt[250gr LRNFP]. These are two excellent powders.
Haven't tried H-110 in my .357, 2400 works too good to change. Unique also in .38spl loads, but, in .357 cases. They just feed a bit smoother. Thought I'd toss that out there.

I would be interested in knowing the chronograph results for 15.0g H110 with the 110g XTP and the barrel length on your rifle. I load 15.0g of H110 with a 110g FMJ for my M1 Carbine and the load chronographs at an Average Velocity of 1951 fps with Extreme Spread of 53 fps and Standard Deviation of 20 fps. 15.0g of H110 is the maximum recommended charge weight for my application.

I'm going to pick up a pound of 2400 and work up some loads now that I've got the 357 in 125 gr, 140 gr and 158 gr to experiment with. Thanks for the tips, guys!

Alliant publishes load data for all of these bullet weights, so I'll compare their numbers with whatever else I can find and give myself some options.

My reloading book states that 2400 is the best powder for 110 gr bullets for rifle in .357 Starting load at 17.0 gr yields 2005 fps and the max is 20.3 gr yielding 2291 fps.

I've been through trying 110's and never had good results in rifle or revolver loads. For plinkers, cheap and fairly accurate accurate are what I want. 110 XTP's are neither. XTP's in 125,140 and 180 are really good for accuracy loads in rifle and revolver. I've had mixed luck with plated bullets in revolvers with 158's being generally better. Plated 158's work surprisingly well in my 357 BBS carbine for accurate plinkers. I've not tried any cast bullets yet in the BBS 357 but I am going to after recent good results with them in my Henry single shot 44 Magnum.

Once you figure out how to get the 110s to perform, you will probably have run out of them.

At that point, it would be wise to move to 158 grain. They just work.

Yessir, you're probably right, but in the meantime, I'm getting lots of good reloading practice, lots of fun range time and the 357 BBS just gets smoother and smoother all the time!

I've picked up some Alliant 2400, and I'll load with that powder later this week, and not only with the 110s, but I'll work in some 125s, 140s and 158s, just for grins.

To your point, though, I'm almost already through about half of my "free" 110 grains, so the light at the end of the frustration tunnel grows a bit brighter with each range visit!

More to come!

We must have the same book! Found the exact same numbers in my Lyman manual. Think I'll try some "right down the middle" loads of about 18.5 gr and see what happens!

I am confused and concerned about this. I know the 110grn bullet is short, but this looks totally wrong. Does it pack the powder down?

The pic is a 357 case with 20 grains of 2400.

I don't load 2400 so I don't know about it specifically but compressed loads are common .... IF you are following info from an established manual and still have concerns, back off to the lowest charge given and work up

Are you starting low and work up incrementally ?
Are you using rifle data.
17g sounds like a lot 20gs makes me shiver.
I plan on going Tuesday.
Using 9.3g graduated up to 12gs of Alliant 2400 for 125g and 158g Barry's.

This is not my load. I use only 158 grn bullets and load appropriately. I was referring to the discussion about 110 grn bullets.

This is true. The density of the powder & load data will sometimes result in a nearly full case.
The Alliant website however shows 19.5 grains as maximum for the 110 grain bullet so i would think about backing that off.

As noted by Shaky Jake above (pg 3), the Lyman manual starts at 17.0 with Alliant 2400 and maxes out at 20.3 grains, noting that this highest load is also the most accurate of those listed.

Like I said above, I'm planning on basically splitting the difference and trying 18.5 to start.

Evan, I haven't loaded any 110's in .357 with 2400, but, I'm thinking 17.5gr would be a good place to start. According to Allinant, those loads on their website, should be reduced by 10%. Making that 19.5/2400 listing as 17.55gr of 2400.
When I called Alliant, the tech mentioned the same; back off 10% to start. This is how I came to my load using 2400/158 XTP's in my .357. 11.5-12.5gr 2400[.357]. Hope this helps.
