Doing a little reloading for my Henry Big Boy Steel 44 Magnum. I'm using Starline brass, CCI #350 large pistol magnum primers, Winchester 296 powder and Zero 240gr JSP bullets. These are just some target loads.

Winchester 296 is a slow burning powder and it requires a magnum primer. W296 performs it's best at close to max charge and to efficiently and effectually burn the powder, it need's a magnum primer. And since I'm after high velocity with these rounds, I'm using W296 powder.

I always use magnum primers when they are called for by the loading data. They cost the same in the small pistol primers I use for .38 and .357 magnum, so why not. I know that when using Titegroup or HP38 in target loads, it really doesn't make a difference, but I keep both on hand, so why not. When I load IMR 4227 loads in .357, I definitely need to use magnum primers.

Me, too. If the loading data indicate a magnum primer, that's what I use; when they call for standard, then I use those. But both are always on my shelf.

I don't go by what the load data suggest the hand loader to use. I go by what the powder manufacturer suggest the hand loader to use. But, I do have some load data that the powder manufacturer suggest to use a standard primer, but I use a magnum primer cause I'm dealing with case pressure. The pressure causes the case (brass) to fire form better inside of the chamber. Since the casing is better sealed up against the chamber wall, I get a higher level of a clean burn. I also use magnum primers sometimes to help seal the casing inside of the cylinder on some of my revolver hand loads. When the casing is not sealed in the cylinder, burnt powder residue escapes past the casing and sometimes hits the shooter in the face. When I use magnum primers when the powder manufacturer calls for a standard primer, I always work up my load data....ALWAYS

Disclaimer......just cause I said I use magnum primers in some of my hand loads when I should be using standard primers, does "NOT" mean for whoever is reading this to start using magnum primers in place of standard primers. If you do, always work your load up and watch for pressure signs.

Bought a new .40 cal recently so I've been loading a bunch for it. Burned up all my AutoComp so developing a new load using AA#7. Loaded up 50 rounds, five sets of ten from 6.8 gn to 7.9 gn using Berry's 180 gn HP. Chronographed them today and was surprised to find the 7.9 gn load to have the lowest SD and a pleasing average velocity around 920 fps. This will be my new range load until I can track down some more AutoComp.

A chronograph will put a smile on your face from ear to ear cause it will tell you what the firearm like's the most. If I ever shoot mine, which I hope I don't, I'll replace it in a heart beat. It makes hand loading so much more fun. When I'm using my chronograph, my wife laughs at me cause my rounds on target are all over the place. I try to explain to her that I'm not shooting for accuracy right now, I'm seeing what the firearm like's the best and that accuracy will come next. I try to explain about the goal of the lowest SD and about velocity to her but it goes in one ear and out the other. And of course, my mouth gets in the way of my brain, and out comes the kitchen comment.

Haven't loaded anything lately.
But the last 41 mag for the BBS.
and also some 223 for the new AR.

In the 41 I'm using a 210 gr swc, and H110 & 2400 in the magnum cases & Blue Dot & Unique in some special cases. I think the H110 is gonna be the best, and in the 41 spl. it's been pretty equal.
In the AR I'm using a 55 gr bullet and cfe 223, H 4195, & X terminator. The cfe has got the best results.

I'll be loading some .38s with HP38 for the model 10 later today. Tomorrow I plan to load up some .357s for the Henry in the hope that I can get to the range on Tuesday.

My accuracy load for Henry BBS .44 mag. is clearly IMR 4227 and Hornady 240 HP XTP, Starline brass and WLP primers. It does not reach the velocity that H110 does. But chronographs well and the SD is very low.

Put together some plinkers for my old Marlin 30-30 using MBC 165 gn coated FP and 8.5 gn Herco. This load is a real pleasure at the range. Shoots clean and recoil is almost nonexistent. Fairly accurate at modest distances as well.
This is just a fun range load. Wouldn't use this load for hunting.

Just got some HiTek coated 255g Keith type bullets for my BB 45 Colt Carbine. I'm going to try to work up some loads for deer hunting using H110.

Busy day at the bench. 50 rounds of 357 mag for the Henry Big Boy Steel using 158 gn jacketed FP and AA#7. Also, 50 rounds of 40 S&W for the FN using 180 gn Berry's HP and AA#7. Primed 100 more 40 S&W cases then tumbled, decapped, and sized 200 45LC cases.

I will be loading 223 Remington this evening if I get a chance. Going to the range Friday if it is not windy. I have a pair of 223's to get ready for some ground hog hunts coming up in June after the first hay cutting. It is still rainy weather here and the muddy conditions at the range road I could do with out. Have to see what the weather does today and tomorrow before I decide on going. I have a few different loads to try in these two rifles so I would like to have a day to shoot with little to no wind. Probably load about 50-60 rounds of different powder and bullet combinations. Still using my old RCBS Rock Chucker press I bought in the 70's and my old scale and Lyman powder measure. Maybe should up grade a few items but I like my old stuff to well.

I keep all of my working brass in labeled boxes that identifies the headstamp and the primer. I make "cigar ring" labels for the finished box of ammo that indicates the bullet and the powder information. Then I lock them in the ammo cabinet for my next trip to the range.

Once they've been fired, I clean the brass, prime the cases, and put them back in their box, then I check off the number of times that they've been fired.

I loaded these yesterday.

Great system. I wish I was that organized.
All of my pistol/revolver brass ends up tossed into caliber specific bins until I have enough to justify tumbling a batch. Head stamps always end up mixed and I have no clue how many times individual cases have been loaded. I'm careful to inspect each case before loading and keep revolver brass trimmed to uniform length to ensure consistent crimp.
I try a bit harder with rifle brass. It all gets sorted by headstamp and number of times reloaded gets logged.

I used to trim the brass, but after doing it once, additional trimming never made a difference. Now, I don't trim them at all. Because I use brass of the same origin in each box of cases, when I crimp, which I do as a separate and last step, I reset the die for the length of the cases in that particular box. It's an easy adjustment to make. Knock on good Henry wood -- I haven't had any issues.

Getting low on 44 mag handloads as well.
