Late season deer hunt

Heading out at oh dark 30 for the deer hunt tomorrow. I will be shooting from a blind in a pasture next to the river. Looking for a medium size doe. I like tasty and tender meat.

Shooting my 357 steel carbine. I will be using American Eagle soft points tomorrow. These I am hoping to replace with my hand loads in the future.

I am quite excited. This will be my second deer, hopefully.

Hunting the Loup? No kidding! Been in that country many, many times, back when I lived in Nebraska. Much, much different country where I live now, but I do miss Nebraska a lot. Best of luck on your hunt.

Well, it took two mornings. I'm going to say that first one was just for practice. We saw easily 30 deer in the first hour. But it was so dark I would not take a shot. My son was going nuts. And then it seemed like a switch was thrown no more deer. Headed home and rested up.

We went back out this morning. In the same spot as yesterday we saw absolutely nothing. After an hour and a half, we decided to change locations. While walking to another location we saw an entire herd of deer moving down a trail
about 100-125 yards away.

As I climbed into a stand, we saw three or four coyotes chasing the deer. My son decided to go on foot around and try and push the deer back to me. While he was gone I took a shot at a coyote. Missed. My son had previously also shot at a coyote and missed. It occurred to me that my scope may not have traveled well.

I removed the scope and prepared to use my Skinner peep. Not long after, a nice deer came along and stood quietly for me to draw a bead on it and I shot it. And hit the shoulder. It took off through the trees I saw it going out for maybe 75 yards before I lost sight if it.

While waiting for it to bleed out, a coyote came along and I dropped him. My son was really excited about that.

All together a great hunt. About 175 lbs of deer hanging in the garage. I am happy and sore. The Henry did it flawlessly. I am so pleased with my 357 carbine.

Congrats on a great hunt and great report! Quick thinking (and nice preparedness) on swapping in the Skinner! How far off was the doe you took? Fantastic results with a great rifle!

Dog and deer were both taken at 40-50 yards.

I intentionally set up the peep to sit under the scope. Turns out it was a good idea. And a better story too.

Had backstrap steak and eggs with my son this am. He guided my hunt and got the first rewards. Have one batch of jerky ready to share. Another in the marinade. Roasts promised to family I will be visiting in Colorado soon.

One of the best parts of hunting is sharing the great food with others. Again, thank you all for your support and encouragement. You all mean a lot to me.

My new whitetail preference is my .357 BBSC too. Also with Skinner Express sights. Mines not blooded yet though. Congrats on your doe!

Here’s a very interesting link to a study on coyotes. I don’t see the need to waste a bullet on them after reading it...

Interesting, I will not hesitate to shoot a coyote.
I may consider trapping after reading that. Regardless, any hunt becomes a coyote hunt when they are evident.

Interesting article along with your perspectives about taking out coyotes. I plan to share the article with my son-in-law, who regularly shoots coyotes on his property. And especially the closer it is to opening of deer season.

Guess it comes from my younger days, when my brother and I raised cattle.
You've probably never lost any livestock, to them.
They can be hard on the calves, so they were/are shot on site.

I'm no trophy hunter, and trust me we have a lot of deer.
So I take 'em when I can.
