Shooting between the rain drops

Post by bandit1250 » Thu May 12, 2016 8:01 pm

Another on and off rain day. Trying to get to do any shooting is getting hard to do with the muddy conditions and targets getting wet. This is getting old fast. I saw a break in the clouds today and put my target out at my 33yd. back stop and wanted to shoot a 39A Marlin I had never shot since I bought it in the early spring of 2015. I didn't bother to shoot this one as it is in mint condition made in 1978 and I knew I would never hunt with it with other ones to use. I ran a couple wet patches through it and dried it out with a pass or two. It was sighted in I guess when I bought it from the gentlemen that owned it. The first shot went high then it shot the rest low. Maybe wasn't clear dry for the first round. Shot CCI standard velocity and then moved the adjustments to get it in the bull. While sitting there on the porch shooting target I shot four starlings off the bird feeder. I hate starlings. Then I shot some Norma Tac at the two top circles and then here come the rain again. Have to put this one through some more shooting. Seems like a good one. Bought this one with the Nikon 4X rimfire scope for $450 of this private owner.

First shots was the bottom center circle then the rest of the two bottom rows were all CCI Standards. Two top circles were Norma tac 22. All were at 33 yrds. Can't get 50 until I get to the range when it dries up.

Nice rifle and a very good deal. By the look of the targets I'd say that you have well sighted in. Thanks for the good photo.

Yes, we've had those raindrops here, too. But it appears you shot very well in between the drops, Bandit....good job.
And especially like the sharp-looking wood stock on your "new" rifle.

Ah, behind that rifle and shooting bench, the grass looks vibrantly green! A fine result of those raindrops. ;)

Beautiful combo! I need to get in your will.

I'll be 77 in July so it might not work out.

That is great shooting. Do you ever measure the groups?

I measure groups most of the time and then log the results in my note book that has each rifle listed in it. I also write down lot #'s that particular rifle likes. I am not in competition with no one except my self and occasionally I have to watch out that my wife don't show me up. I might be better off with her limited time she gets to shoot or I might come back from the range with my tail between my legs. She can impress me some days. I am a hunter first and if I can throw a dime on my groups and cover them or barely see any edge of a hole out side of it I figure I am in the 5/8"-3/4" range and I can put several dimes on the side of a squirrels head so all is good. This Marlin I shot for the first time yesterday if it doesn't have a problem with cold bore shots it will make a nice rifle to hunt squirrels with. I hope it may only have a clean bore issue. I would rate it so far from what I see as being in the top four or so in my collection of 39A's in accuracy. More range time will tell. The trigger is a bear on this rifle and needs to be lighter. Here is the group sizes from yesterday measured CTC. It surprised me it shot CCI Standards about the same it shot the Norma Tac 22.

Here is a portable target board my brother made me out of thick layered card board and wrapped in plastic packaging wrap. Take it and set it up anywhere you have something to lean it up against and shoot hundreds of rounds through it before it needs replaced. It had feet on it to stand it up but I cut them off so I can stick it behind my truck seat. I usually use my spinner target frame up behind it to hold it if nothing else is there. Comes in handy for a quick target set up.

Even though it is used now, I will give you $455 for it and pay for the shipping.
