equivalence of powders ?

Post by BruniX » Thu Dec 27, 2018 3:07 pm

hello !

hello to all, I came across this site that provides powder equivalence.

http://www.adi-powders.com.au/powder-equivalents/

What do you think about this ?

is this reliable and can we consider safely substituting one powder for another?

most reloading manuals have similar charts .... for me they provide interesting reading but I wouldn't use it as a single source for making a decision .... I prefer to go with the manual's specific recommendation as to the brand of powder and size of the powder charge

Not in the formal sense of 'substitution' as you DO NOT want use the load data for say powder "X" for powders 'Y' and 'Z' just because they are in the same category as equivalent.
What is meant by 'equivalent' is they are of a similar burning speed and will produce similar velocities and energy in loads as the other powders BUT you still need to follow the data as published for that particular powder!

ADI in Australia produces gunpowder that is imported and labeled in the US as both Hodgdon and IMR. According to their website, these Hodgdon and IMR labeled powders are equivalent to ADI labeled powders.
ADI-powders.com wrote:
ADI exports a range of propellant to the US market where they are rebranded by Hodgdon Powder Company. We share reloading data and technical information with Hodgdon, which helps keep our products at the cutting edge of performance and quality, also the sizeable volumes of Aussie-made powder we export to the US help keep local manufacture economically viable.

Not yet, i will wait to receive henry riffle before and test it with "standard ammo", federal, to see what is the recoil.

as I am careful and meticulous, I bought bullets for which I was sure to find reloading information:

- SI8900 Cal 45/70 FN 300 grs Pro Hunter SI8900
- Remington 45/70 405GR SP

Then, according to the information found in the lyman 50th edition,
I acquired the powder that could be suitable for a maximum of cases: imr 4198

I still have to buy the primers: cci 200 and starline 45-70 cases.

and I made two tables, one for each bullet for progressive charge :

Capture d’écran de 2019-01-09 19-13-01.png (175.07 KiB) Viewed 3342 times
Finally I will be very careful to respect
the dimensions of the ammunition :

Capture d’écran de 2019-01-09 20-18-47.png (164.11 KiB) Viewed 3342 times
i wil inspect case after every shooting to check for signs of overpressure...

and with all that, I hope it will be fine!

if you see a stupidity in what I propose to do, do not hesitate to tell me! :?

sounds to me like you are following a well thought-out process .... IMR 4198 is considered by many folks I know to be the consummate 45-70 powder .... follow the charges given in your reloading manual and you will do fine

Starline brass is an excellent choice BruniX. When I competed in PPC years ago the top shooters were using Starline brass for their .38 Special target loads. I currently use it for my 45-70 target loads.

Spot on a lot of the ADI powders are relabeled for other markets in which case the data is interchangable. There are others as well win296/H110 springs to mind

Hodgdon HS-6 is equivalent to Winchester 540
Hodgdon HP-38 is equivalent to Winchester 231

Hodgdon makes good gunpowder. I have loaded several match winning cartridges with Hodgdon gunpowders.

Not sure of the equivalent to any other powder, but, I've found a very good load using Alliant BE-86 for the .357 mag/158gr XTP's. Working on same powder with 250gr RNFP Missouri bullets for the .45 Colt. Looks promising, will report when I try the .45's. 357 were superb in accuracy and velocity from BBB, 20" barrel.

There is one thing that's important to remember. Just because a particular gunpowder is listed next to another on a burn rate chart does not mean it's close in burning characteristics. Some gunpowders are position sensitive and some are not. Some listed close to each other on a list may generate significantly different amounts of pressure.

Be careful out there and don't forget to have fun.
