seriously doubt you will be able to tell any difference
Yep - probably the oldest argument in reloading.
Reality being what it is there is no noticible difference and I once read if a person is in a predominantly cold climate magnum primers should used regardless.
A few years ago during the shortages I was stuck buying a brick of LP magnum to load .45 ACP with and no difference noticed.

I can't find the 110 gr Speer "plinkers" anywhere. Midway won't even let you backorder them. I have a "Notify Me" logged with MidSouth Shooter's supply. Is there a "reasonable" substitute?

Will these work, or is the lack of a cannelure a problem?

It may not be what you're looking for, but it may be. Check out this site for bullets.

Actually you are looking for the Speer 100 Grain Plinkers but I understand.
Hornady makes an equivalent but it too might be hard to find - the 100 grain 'Short Jacket'
If you can find some of the 110 grain FMJ intended for the .30 Carbine those will no doubt work well also.
Another good bullet is the Speer 110 grain JHP and these might be more available but a few bucks more per 100 as they are a 'typical' jacketed bullet.

how about as an alternate Speer 100 gr plinkers ===> https://www.natchezss.com/speer-special ... =AvantLink

I wouldn't want to load a 30-30 without a crimp ring .... when I load them for our 30 Luger I set the depth so that the edge of the jacket can be uses as a crimp ring .... don't know when they will have them back in stock

The link you posted ARE the 'Plinkers' - I don't know why Natchez added the 'special purpose' designation but they are just the standard 100 grain Plinkers.
I have been loading the Plinkers for years with no crimping issues - but a collet crimp die is a necessity.
Scrounged around on my loading desk and found one! - And this is it for me!

I don't think a crimp like that would be safe for a lever gun with a tube magazine. A collect crimp as MrEd suggests would be safer. That's what I use for the 110 carbine bullet soft point and fmj.
In doing more research how JEBar crimp a semi jacketed bullet is how the Lyman Manuel suggests to do the type of crimp.

that may well be ... as I noted, I load them in a 30 Luger where I do crimp them .... they are not bullets I use in our 30-30

Actually a non-cannelured bullet CAN be roll crimped lightly - enough for a light load anyway but ANY 30-30 reload should be collet crimped - it's a major improvement over roll crimping due to the 'thinness' of the 30-30 brass - but I do not want to re-kindle this issue.

historically I've found that most things can be done more than one way and I usually try to find one of them that suits us .... Nosler specifically recommends for 30-30 full length case resizing and crimping .... we've bee using the same RCBS dies since he mid 60's and somewhere along the way we picked up a Lee Factory Crimp Die .... we use Nosler 30-30 Ballistic Silvertip bullets, all of which have a good crimp ring .... what I do know for sure is, doing so works well for us

"but a collet crimp die is a necessity."
"all of which have a good crimp ring"

You guys are throwing around lots of terms that I think might be interchangeable, but I'm not sure.

First, I have the Lee Factory Crimp Die for 30-30, so there's that.

But:
What's a "crimp ring"? Same as cannelure? JEFar?
What is "collet crimping"? Same process as is accomplished via the Lee FCD? MrEd?
Will those Carbine bullets in the Berry bullets link above work with the Lee FCD?

Maybe we are being fast and loose with terms but you have it right ExE.

Using the plated Berrys without a cannelure (357) use a Lee FCD lightly. Don't damage the plating because it might come off in the barrel or in flight.

the picture below shows our old 30-30 loads that used a Winchester 150 gr Silvertip bullet, in that picture the crimp from a Lee Crimping Die can be seen .... the center shows our current Winchester/Nosler Combined Technologies Ballistic Silvertip .... the third shows one of the Ballistic Silvertips with its Cannelure (AKA crimp ring)

Got it (I think!). Will avoid the Berrys for now, since it lacks the cannelure.

MrEd has given me some guidance on some substitutes for the 100 gr Speers. Will continue to research.

Thanks for all the replies and advice (as always)!

Berrys has a good name .... I have no clue why they don't have a Cannelure ring or or regular ring for crimping .... this is a link ==> https://www.midwayusa.com/s?targetLocat ... plied=True <== where you can see the 30-30 jacketed bullets they offer .... all of the others have a cannelure or ring ....no clue why Berrys' doesn't

Bought a box of Speer 110 FMJ bullets today and loading tonight. For 2 bucks more a box I think they might be a better bullet for just plinking & pine cone killing!

The presence (or absence) of the cannelure seems to be driving this selection. The picture in the above link shows the box but not the bullet, so I found the Speer Stock No. on the box and found it on Midway. No cannelure. I"m hesitant to order, based on the back and forth of the last few days.
