Mission Trip

On Friday our youngest son is slated to fly to Nicaragua as one of a 4 man mission trip ..... he is scheduled to spend a week drilling a well and installing a water/irrigation system in a poor rural village .... positive thoughts for the success of the project and for the safe return of those in his party are requested

our son and his 4 man team arrived in a very rural area of Nicaragua late yesterday .... no cell phone reception, they had to drive a ways to get a message back home .... they have worked all day an their project is going well .... they are due to fly back on Friday

Probably one of the best learning experiences a young person can have. Personal growth, the satisfaction of providing a tangible good to those who are less fortunate than ourselves, teaches the camaradarie of common focused work, and really allows a young person to see the world. The rest of the world does not live like the fortunate folks do here in the US. Whether part of an organized church group, a lay group, or student group, a mission trip is a valuable experience that all young people should seek.

During high school, our youngest daughter went on a mission trip with the church youth to Venezuela. She loved it, and had a great experience. Followed up with a stint in the Peace Corps in Ghana, then obtained professional training and ended up being an international tour guide for quite a number of years! The photos and stories I've gotten from her could fill a bunch of travelogues for sure! Her professional "journey" has been fun to tag along with. That one mission work project opened up a huge world window for her!

Sure glad to hear the work project is going well for your son, Jim, and the others in the group. I'm sure you'll hear some good stories when they return home.

our son's mission team flight is in the air and headed for Miami .... only a little over 1,000 miles left on that flight .... if all goes well he should be back to RDU around midnight .... we will all breathe much easier when we know he's back

he's back on American soil in Miami .... 3 hr layover .... flight appears to be on time so his arrival is still anticipated around midnight .... I find Flight Aware to be a good site for tracking flights

he's tired and in the process of settling back into his daily work routine .... this is the second year he's been down there working on this irrigation project .... its in an area where the municipal water isn't really safe to drink, has low pressure, and is often shut down when the larger population areas need more water .... they now have a well, with a pump that can supply irrigation water for coffee growers and water to a church run youth/family center

Glad he made the trip safe and sound and that he's making progress in the process. Makes one pause - again - and give thanks that we were born where we were, doesn't it? I'll think twice before posting about some "first world problem" in the future...
