Weaver scope on my BBB

Post by PT7 » Fri Apr 29, 2016 10:52 pm

Uncharted waters.
I bought a Weaver scope for my .357 Henry, and I mounted it today during the afternoon rain. The only identification on the left side of the scope shows "Weaver V4.5-A USA." No other markings that I can find. Of course, I'm not an expert, but this scope looks to be in very good condition. :D

Brief background on sights for this Big Boy.
I've never had a rifle with a scope before, although I've tried out a couple of my friend's rifles. The only other optic I once mounted on this Henry was a red dot. But took it off for two reasons. First, the scope really didn't seem to fit with the classic look of the lever-action rifle; and second, the big DUH. I sure had a brain drain when I bought the red dot, because I have partial color blindness. I had difficulty seeing either the red or green dots.

OK, now that the big DUH has been confessed. ;) Last year I installed a Skinner barrel-mounted peep sight, and I both like it and have been shooting quite well with it. But I've always wanted to learn how to mount and sight in a scope. So when I found this Weaver, I decided to go for it. Just for fun, and also to learn something new. Hope to find some additional web info about this scope.

Next to the range.
I've done nothing further than mounting the Weaver. I'm looking forward to trying it out -- when we again have a break from the spring rains.

Here are pictures of my leap into uncharted waters!

congratulations, I hope the combo will serve you well .... if you've never sighted in a scope, it can go pretty easy or can be frustrating .... suggest you have someone along to help .... start at a close distance, 5 - 10 yards .... from a solid rest put the crosshairs dead on the center of your target .... the odds are, the bullet will not hit there ... relocate the crosshairs on the same spot on the target and hold the rifle firmly in place .... have the person helping you turn the adjustment screws to bring the crosshairs to where they are on the bullet hole .... your rifle will then be close to being zeroed .... from there you move the target back to 25 or so yards and adjust to where the bullets are hitting where you want them .... the key to it is to hold the rifle in place while the crosshairs are being adjusted

That is a good choice for a scope. Here is some info on it. Also you might want to consider the Skinner scope mount. The Picatinny rail looks a little out of place.

What JEBar and Sir H said,

Also, remember because the scope is higher than the gun barrel, the bullet actually crosses your line of sight twice. It is low for the first maybe 20 yds, where it crosses your line of sight the first time. It remains above your line of sight until the trajectory (due to gravity) again crosses your line of sight for the second time. This second point is where the rifle is considered "sighted".

SO, If you crank up the scope to be on target at, let's say, 10 yds, you are actually sighting it in at, like 200yds or more, and will be WAY HIGH at 50yds. If you google 30-30 trajectory, and look at images, you will see......

Good Luck

I will often start at 10 yards and just get it within a few inches. Then move it out to 25 yards or if its something I'm very familiar with then 50 yards. Then get it within and inch and take it out to 100 yards for centerfire. Usually I'll stop at 50 for rimfire and get it as close to dead center as point of aim.

precisely .... put a scope on a rifle and the chances the bullet and crosshairs will match up are pretty much nonexistent .... synchronizing them at 10 yards is much easier than doing so at longer distances .... once they are, the rifle can be sighed in at whatever distance a person prefers

As you can experience you can start at 50 yards. I'll pick a stick or something to shoot and visually see where the bullet hit. Its not uncommon to have the bullet hit six feet from the point of aim. That is why you start close up as you can completely miss even a large target.

I never took realized the base For the Henry was so high. Guess I haven't seen many scoped. Maybe I should have sent lower rings for you. I usually try to mount my scopes as low as possible to get a comfortable cheek weld. The base for Marlin's are a little thick and I use low rings to keep the scope down low on the base. Weaver base, low Weaver rings on 336 SC 35 Remington.

I like low rings also. Remember what Henry88 said about the bullet crossing your line of sight? With a lower mount that distance is changed to the better.
