Remington .243

Took out a .243 Remington 700 that I had give to my son year's ago. He's grown and is in Nebraska so I thought I'd take it out for an exercise. It hadn't been shot in about 11 years (the last time we were on a deer lease.) This is 100 yards shooting Remington 100 gr rounds. I'll confess that this is by far the worst target I've had in a long time. Checking the scope mounting is the first step and I'll go from there after that. I know it's not an expensive rifle but it should shoot better.

I'm certain you know how the rifle should shoot, Jake, because you think the POI results are not good enough. But because of perspective (mine in this case), I'd take that target in a minute. Here's why.

If my estimate is correct, that's a 12" square target. That means the smaller target cornered by the four yellow dots is 6" square. I count (guesstimate) around 26-28 POIs in the splash target. Only one of those is outside of the 6" square.

At 100 yards distance, this square would look awful small to me. That's again partly perspective because I shoot with iron sights and I see you used a scope. But the target is still small at that distance.

I'm possibly way off base, but that many POIs in mostly 6" or less grouping looks darn good to me!
So I'd say "very good shooting."

After you check out your sight mounting, etc., I'd be interested to see any improvement you might garner. Good job!

A model 700 should do much better than that from a bench. I guess it all depends on how well you've done with that setup (sand bags) in the past.

I would definitely try some different ammo.

You're right on the ammo. I was using Remington 100 gr and Federal 100 gr. I had 1 box of each. The one aspect of the rifle I didn't like was the trigger. It breaks pretty hard. I'm going research to see if there's a cure for that. Maybe JEBAR can give me a heads up to his gunsmith down here. I've forgotten his name.

Just in case you didn't already do these things, check that all the screws are tight, even the scope bases. Amazing how things can loosen up over the years, even when unused .
