skinner sights

was cold but sunny today, just had to go try and sight in my new skinner sights. what an improvement for my ageing eyes.the golden boy 17hmr was first up. forgot the stool for my bench and my small brass hammer and punch set. had to use a large ballpeen hammer from the truck.Boy is the aperture some hard to thread in with cold stiff fingers.got it sighted in close enough for now. the frontier .22lr went quicker and eaiser. sure could hit better with the skinner sights than the original sights. very happy. will put one on the pump when the weather warms up.

I had the same results when adding them to my Big Boy 357 carbine. I'll add that they look really good as well.

Just put a skinner low on my .357. A breeze to put on. Had to take off the buckhorn site as it was infringing on my site picture. Will try it out soon.

Tried the Skinner. Must say I am disappointed. When I installed the site it seem to be ok. But as I shot the rifle the site kept coming loose. It would not tighten down and as I used it more I noticed that the threads where not catching on the receiver drill and tap. I moved it to a different drill and tap. Same results. The stem fits very loose in the receiver and if you remove the disc and just screw in the stem it does tighten down but at an oblique angle. Thoughts? I did let Skinner know.

I cannot speak for the Skinner sight but I would recommend anyone who wants a peep sight consider the William's WGRS mounted backwards with the windage blade flipped around. Configured in this manner it looks like it was made for the rifle and works well - and is only $39.95. AND none of the William's sights I have ever owned have ever become loose.

Sounds like you may have a Skinner Low-Pro with 6-48 threads instead of 8-40 threads. I think just about all Henry receivers are tapped to 8-40 - just like Marlins...

I did order the 6-40 as that is what the Skinner site said. The site said that 8-40 was for Marlins and that the other size was for all others mostly. Not having to much luck with Skinners. I have two rifles that i can't shoot as of now because of issues with Skinner.

I made two mistakes here. Trusting the Skinner site and not asking people here on what they used.

yea - it can get a little confusing sometimes getting the right sight setup - but hang in there with Skinner - they are a good company that makes really nice, rugged, effective sights for Henry rifles.

I ordered a Skinner Lo for my Marlin 44. I was shooting high with it at 100 yards and it was in the lowest position. I ordered because I really didn't want to change the front sight. I modified it today on the mini lathe so it will set lower and will try it again tomorrow at the range. If I don't have any luck with it after that I'll just put a Burris on it like my Henry .327

I really didn't want to change the front sight.

Unfortunately changing a rear sight may require changing the front also. I have done many - and got lucky of a few! Don't give up on your rear peep if its what you really want by letting the front stop you.

Skinner is going to send me a correct sight once I send back the incorrect one. In my email exchange with Andy, I suggested that the verbiage regarding fit with the LoPro ,on their site, was misleading. He agreed and said he will make changes to included Henry rifles needing the 8-40 size along with the Marlins. I will be out the postage and insurance on the return but, if this puts this to bed and helps other people order the correct size, I will have do some good.

Question: Screws on Skinner Sights, metric or non metric?

I had some fun with a Skinner Express receiver sight on my BBS .44.
I installed it (easy!) on the receiver, looked it over and decided I'd be needing a taller front post since the peep was way up high there.
Ordered the tallest skinner front patridge (at least .600") and fit it, went to range.
Shoot. The thing was shooting about 6" low. (Too tall!)
Ran some online calculator, put in all the data as accurately as I could, it worked out that I should need a .450" high front post. Skinner sells a patridge, .450,
Eureka!! This should be it. Ordered it and waited.
Fitted and drifted in the .450" and the thing was shooting 3" high at 20 yards (indoors).
Wait...WHAT? Too LOW.

Calculator program says I now need one about .551" high. Since the oriinal was about .500, and since the calculator was full of beans the first time, I've re-installed the big ol bead original front sight. I haven't shot it yet but I'm fairly certain it won't work at all..

Have an H001T .22 in S/L/LR. It has the semi-buckhorn sight. I am thinking of switching to a Skinned peep but not sure which to use. I have the two drilled/tapped holes under the existing sight if I want to go that route but the one that fits into the dovetail is a lot cheaper since I wouldn't have to get the dovetail blank to fill the hole and a taller front sight. Any assistance with this problem would be greatly appreciated. I can afford the screwed sight but If the dovetail one works well why not go with it?

I have never looked through a dovetail mounted one but It appears to me a peep sight that far from the eye would not work well due to the shorter sighting plane.

If it were mine I'd put a Skinner Rimfire groove sight on the receiver and a Lyman .494" Globe on the front. We have a Henry 24" Frontier 22LR with this setup and it's almost like looking thru a low power scope for a sight picture - works really well.

I imagine the receiver mounted sights would be better but I fitted all my Henry rifles with the Skinner dovetail rear sight that replaces the buckhorn sight and I have been well pleased. I could buy two of those for the price of one receiver sight. For most, the front sight did not have to be changed, although I changed most of my front sights to a sight with a smaller gold bead (1/16').
