Songs that make you cry.

Yesterday I was cleaning my .357 and listening to some tunes on the player when one came on that absolutely stopped me in my tracks and had me sniffling with tears down my face. After composing myself, I got to thinking what other songs could do that to me. I looked through my CD's and was surprised at the number. I decide i was going to list three and see what you big strong guys and gals list that make you cry. I have varied taste in music so I took one from three different genres. Here they are:

" Honey" Bobby Goldsboro That was the one that got this started. My wife walk by while I wa sniffling. She just shook her head. She knew she married a cryier.

" He stopped loving Her today " George Jones. Probably the Best Ever C/W song. The background vocals are haunting.

"Un bel di" aria from the opera " Madame Butterfly" you do not need to understand the words to feel the pain as Madame Butterfly laments her not seeing her husband for two years

There you go. How about your tear jerkers? Excuse me while I go listen to " Amazing Grace " played by a piper. That one gets me going also. Brings back a memory.

Music is the most affective medium we have. It triggers emotions like none other. That's why soundtracks in movies contribute so much to a film's ability to move us. Spielberg used the Jaws theme music to trigger fear and anticipation in scenes of that movie that were actually benign. If the sound was turned off, they would be uneventful. Hitchcock did the same thing in Psycho. If you watch that famous shower scene with the sound turned off, it is really quite tame. The violence was all in the musical score. That's why we should all beware of any so called "news story" that has a music track behind it; it's an intended manipulation of the audience.

Not a day has passed during the last four years that I have not cried. It started with my wife's diagnosis of terminal cancer and continues daily without exception. I have 32 gigs of music in my car, but I can't listen to it anymore. Every love song trips the wire. It can make a trip to the grocery store difficult.

Nice analogy Stan. For me it all depends on the mood Im in at the time. I think from the western side of the movies The Good The Bad and The Ugly Ennio Morricones music is alive and well in a lot of households. I for one have trouble getting thru the song by Brooks and Dunn called Believe. Al

I appreciated this unknown-to-me-blogger for the word intro to this musical performance. I suggest reading it before you click on the video link for the song. Music is by the Denmark National Symphony, featuring oboist Davida Scheffers. To me, the music and word thoughts are rich. It contains most everything that might bring tears: the pathos of Schindler's List, especially as it has such incredible history behind its composition; the musicians putting their all into the performance; family emotion as seen expressed by the oboist's tears, and her daughter's tears; and the audience's appreciation. It is a "hard-to-watch" performance because of the tears. Yet well worth it as one highly emotional presentation of musical artistry.

I think that it's not only the song itself, but the singer and the situation. I often find myself tearing up on these talent search shows when the plain janes (male or female) step on stage, and the judges roll their eyes and sigh... then the singers knock the song out of the park.

I love the stunned looks on the faces of the judges and the joy on the faces of the contestants. I can't sing very well, the shower cuts off if I sing in there... but I admire those who can.

Too many funerals. I don't do funerals anymore. I won't be attending mine.

Hey, Marine. Agreed about the plain Janes. There are some really incredible voices from everywhere; we just need to look & listen, right?!?

I actually watch too many of these performances, and my nearby Kleenex box empties rather quickly.

Mostly listen to BGT, and lately quite a few choir performances such as "Missing People Choir." Too often I do repeats, and drop some tears at a second or third listen.

Salute "Taps" is in a class by itself.

Lots of great music out there. It enriches us all!

The first thing that came to mind was the soundtrack from the movie Annie. When the kids were little they would play that thing as soon as they rolled out of bed every morning for months. Then it would get a re-play pretty much every evening. They weren't Happy tears or sad tears.......They were when will it end tears.

On a serious note. Taps at a funeral does it every time. And anytime I hear it on Memorial Day, My Dad passed on Memorial Day 1992. I miss him.

Music is one of the things that has always had power in my life. My mother and all her sisters, ten of them, had voices like angels. A family reunion on my mother's side was like a concert. Music got me thru low points in my life, highlighted high points, and accompanied me in the loneliest periods. I find my eyes will mist even with the best music performed well.

My wife grins when I sing along with the radio. Or maybe I spelled it wrong... groans.

We saw John Denver live, the year before he died... we were ten rows back, center stage.
I caught her out of the corner of my eye as JD sang accappella with a famous tenor... Placido Domingo, on their duet, "Perhaps Love."

Funny... her eyes were damp. There were a lot of damp eyes in the crowd.

I had seen him live several years before, an outdoor concert, with a full symphony orchestra. It was an amazing night. When the concert ended, half the audience stayed sitting, not to avoid the rush... we didn't want to break the mood. I can still remember the feeling the music generated on both those nights.

I went to a few other concerts over the years.

The only concert that came close was 1975...
A fat Elvis came to Richmond and my mother was supposed to take my sister and four of her teeny bopper friends. My mom had emergency surgery and couldn't take them. My step dad refused...

I was tasked with the job. Fat Elvis held the capacity crowd in his hands, and awed the audience. He killed it.

I was in my A School for Avionics in Millington TN two years later when he died. The base was just outside Memphis... I can say, without reservation, he was like Royalty.

Everything stopped...the entire city gasped as one when the news hit.

I'm glad The Wiz got this great thread going. Been listening to some wonderful music and appreciating the comments from, as The Wiz said, "you big strong guys and gals." This one BGT video about put me under the computer table when I first saw/heard it. Why it so emotionally impacted me takes a little story (Oh no, PT7 is at his jabbering again!)

Just like a lot of you Good Folk have said, I also love music. It gives us so much richness I can't even find the words. I'm a musician, having started keyboard when I was six years old. That means I've been playing now for 64 years, and continue to do so. My Mom absolutely loved music, especially instrumentals and many of the famous mellow "crooners" such as Jim Nabors, Andy Williams, Steve Lawrence, Frank Sinatra, and so on. I grew up hearing a lot of great music coming out of her wooden console record player. On the other hand, my Dad knew very little about music, and never real said anything about the music in our home --- including all the sounds I played. Because of his silence, I don't know if he liked any of it....I hope he did.

OK. Especially over the last few years I've been experiencing very significant hearing loss. In fact, last spring after I had a 1-year checkup and complete audiology exam, my audiologist told me "in all the years I've been in this field, you are the person I've tested who has had the most significant loss of hearing within a 12-month span." Well, I knew something was amiss, but her comment really jolted me. In particular about my music hearing, I've noticed I'm having trouble with tones, harmonies, and those blends. It's been really tough playing lately; but I'm not yet giving up.

I'll let the young lady tell her story as it is related to hearing loss. I'm encouraged when I view and listen to it. Pay attention to the title of her song selection, too. As my hearing continues to fade, I really appreciate what this lady brings to my thinking as I'm battling my hearing at times. Plus she is quite a good vocalist and has real emotional depth to her musical sharing. Enjoy...and you might need to dab with a Kleenex or two!

Concerning taps, there is a beautiful piece named ‘ El Silencio’ that is centered on that theme. A single horn, accompanied by orchestra. It moves me every time. And, of course, the Star Spangled Banner.
