WGRS sight

While I wait for my big boy to get here, I’ve been looking for accessories and the first thing I wan to do is change the rear sights to peep sights. I’ve looked at skinner but before I settle on that I was wondering if the Williams wgrs for the 336 will fit on the big boy steel.

It will fit but it will hang over the hammer a bit.
I've used one on my Brass Big boy.

Thanks, I’ve seen pics of the FP hanging over the hammer, is that the case with the wgrs also?

That's a brass Big Boy with a Williams FP sight.

While the the Big Boy reciever sight mount holes are set apart the same distance as those on Marlin 336 type reciever they are set about 1/2 inch further back than on a Marlin. This means all Williams 336 sights hang over the hammer.
I've tried to live with it but I've ended up moving them forward and using only one screw to mount the sight.
If I knew a good gunsmith I'd get a new forward hole drilled.

One more question. Is the distance from the rearmost mounting bolt hole to the end of the receiver the same on the BB steel as it is on the brass model? I’ve seen some pictures and it seems the hole on the brass model is closer to the end of the receiver than on the steel, but I don’t know if it’s just the angle of the pictures or if there really is a difference in distance.

It is my understanding that the Williams Receiver Sights hang over the Hammer in both the Steel and Brass Big Boys. I don't have a Steel Model to measure.
From what I surmise from the different threads I have read in regards to Williams receiver sights the main difference between the brass and steel models is the width of the receiver the Brass being wider.

Thanks, that is my understanding also. I’ll just have to see when my rifle gets here. If I don’t like the look I can always send the sights back to amazon.

I had a smith drill &tap a third hole and mount the fp336 a half inch forward. You can see a picture of it in the thread "williams FP sight".

It's really not a big deal to d/t the hole yourself. A little common sense and patience, #28 bit, and a 8-40 tap is all that is needed. I tried the Williams FP-336 sight in the rearward most two holes first to make sure I liked it and that the carbine would be able to be zeroed with the sight. I then moved the sight forward 1 hole and d/t the needed hole. Finish the job off with a rear sight filler blank.

I'm new to this thread but after reading through all the posts I cannot believe somebody has not seen the resolution for the WGRSS sights over hanging the rear of the receiver. Remove the top half of the sight as you normally would to install it. Unscrew the mounting screwa, rotate the sight base 180 degrees and reinstall it. You will see there is a " long" and "short end to the base and this will fix the overhang. At least it did on my Marlins.

If you look at the pic in my thread the sight does not completely hang over the hammer but it is enough where it might be irritating for some. You can still catch the hammer with your thumb but sometimes get it caught between the sight and the hammer. The hammer shoe however eliminates this problem if you don’t want to have the additional hole D & T for the sight.

I see that but can the aperature be reversed and threaded in the ‘Front’ of the mount ? I didn’t try that.

Thr aperture stays where it is. The top half of the sight will now move to the rear to raise elevation instead of going to the front.

You would be looking through the aperature in reverse IE the larger ‘sunshade’ portion would be toward the barrel - you might not get the proper sight picture.

NO! You put the top half pf the sight in the track with the aperture facing to the rear as it always did. (Instead of sliding up from the rear it will slide up from the front ( or vice versa) . Just go ahead and do it and you will see

Uh, have you done this yourself? I actually already tried this and it results in the top half of the sight 'canting' downward due to the offset angles of the the opposing parts.

The suggestion to reverse the WGRS sight will work. Not optimally. One could remove the aperture and use it as a ghost ring.
I might try for a shoot Saturday.
