Range Report: .22WMR

Post by Sir Henry » Tue Apr 19, 2016 6:50 pm

I shouldn't have posted I was going to the range today as I did terrible and would rather not post. Me and my big mouth.

When I got to the range I expected it to be packed as its been closed in the daytime for the last nine month. But I unlocked the range and was the only one there for the first two hours.

Both the Winchester 9422 and the Henry Small Game Carbine were .22WMR and wore the same scope. And both needed to be sighted in. I couldn't hit paper at 25 yards with either so moved it in to 10 yards. Finally hitting paper I was able to zero it at 10 yards then moved back out to 25 and then to 50 yards. Then for my final test I went to 100 yards.

I was shooting Federal Premium with Speer TNT HP bullets.

The Winchester cycled easy but the trigger was at four to five pounds. Much too heavy for my liking. Then when I went to the Henry with a two pound trigger I kept firing it premature. It just was not a good combination. So I'm thinking I need to spend a day each with the rifles.

At least it was a beautiful day at the range. I started out with a few CCI rounds.

I shot the Winchester first and was still zeroing it when I went to 100 yards. I didn't adjust the scope after the first shot but did between the 50 and 100. Need to go two clicks lower.

Looks like I could have gone a click right on the scope.

I'm thinking both rifles should have given me half the size groups or even smaller. But I know it was me and not the rifles. So this comparison continues.

That looks like it was a beautiful day.

I agree with you. The two rifles are very similar, but with distinctly different triggers, a long period between the two would be in order. Not bad shooting though.

Thanks for the vicarious thrill of the range report!

Looks like the day was beautiful at the range. :D And it has got to be fun to "own" the range for yourself -- at least for a while.

I rarely take more than one firearm on a range outing. And you had the courage to take two different rifles, although the same caliber, and needing to sight them both in! Plenty to do. But I was glad to see you had your coffee cup filled to fortify you.

Guess I really need to focus on how best to shoot one-a-day. I don't even chew bubble gum while shooting -- it would probably end up between the hammer and the firing pin!

Your shooting was fine, as you brought it together. Anyway, you sure have an interesting comparison going with your rifles. It will be fun to see your final results after you have individual range days with the Winchester and Henry. BTW, I love my SGC in .22LR. And I bet the SGC in .22 Magnum is a blast! That rifle is most well-balanced and accurate.

Thanks for taking us along, Sir Henry. This is where it's all at!! :D

I really like the Small Game Carbine and it has the best offhand balance of any rifle I have. But that doesn't transfer to great bench shooting like it does offhand.

Part of my problem was I was shooting at 100 yards and the ammo I was using is best under 50 yards. Next time I'm going to take some V-Max which is better for longer distances.

A day of fresh air, sunshine, and a bit of gun smoke. Priceless!
Glad you got to the range. I was thinking while reading your report that the SGC was not built for bench resting. So you did a great job with it being out of it's element. I have the same issue with shooting two guns with very different triggers. I usually recognize it after a few shots with the second gun. My two primary carry guns have very similar triggers so I tend to be very consistent with each.

Something that works for me when shooting two weapons with disparate trigger pull weights. Shoot the light trigger weapon first.

When my striker fired 9mm was new to me, I would go to the range and take my .22 target pistol. The 9 has a 5.5 lb long pull. After shooting 50+ rounds through it, I would switch to the .22 with a 2.5 lb short, crisp trigger. Had a lot of premature fires. Not unexpected enough to be a safety problem, just an accuracy problem. I eventually swapped the order of firing around. Problem solved. I have shot enough with both now that I can go back and forth with little to no problem.
