custom Henry Mare's Legs

I built two custom Henry rimfire Mare's Legs in December of 2013. I bought two .22LR Mare's Legs and two .22WMR rifles. My goal was to built two .22WMR Mare's Legs. At the time Henry did not offer them. They do now but only with the round barrel. I made one from a round barrel and one from an octagon barrel. I had to completely disassemble two rifles, have the barrels cut down and then have the rifles rebarelled by Henry.

I don't have all the pictures in one place and couldn't find many of them but here are a few.

This picture shows the octagon rifle completely torn apart.

For this to work the headspace needed to be correct. I measured the pin notches and they seemed to be the same. Even a slight difference would make them useless. It was a big gamble but it worked.

The receivers are different but the differences wasn't in the measurements.

Long story short I now have the only Henry Mare's Leg with an octagon barrel and also it is in .22WMR. It would have been much easier to just cut down a rifle but that would be illegal so I had to switch barrels. It was also very expensive. I have about $800 into the custom Mare's Leg but that also includes other modifications.

You should put a rail where that dovetail cover on the barrel is, this would be like a laser with a good optic.

If I were to do it again I would use a Small Game Carbine as a doner which doesn't have the dovetail or the screw holes.

I like the idea of a laminate stock. Two of my M'sLgs are scoped. Very accurate for a pistol but not against a rifle.

In Washington State you can not have a loaded rifle in a vehicle but you can a pistol.

That's one lf the advantages of the mares leg, it can go where rifles can't and it's 50 state legal.

The circuit judge stocks can fit on a few of the taurus revolvers. If you cut it down so you could only cheek weld it that might be good for the 22, a mares leg pistol revolver.

On the 992 6 inch that'd be a mean accurate mares leg with a cut down circuit judge stock.

Not mine, it's a Chiappa triple threat, but the Henry single shot rifles and shotguns can easily achieve something similar. Would make great backpacking guns, especially in .410.

I bet a Ruger Charger or Thompson Contender pistol would be a sweet mares leg.
