Single action revolvers

Post by TRock » Wed Dec 06, 2017 10:09 pm

Excuse me if this has been discussed to death (new to the forum). But do others feel the need to buy single action revolvers to go with their Henry rifles? I have a Ruger Vaquero 45lc to go with its counterpart ,and a 357 Ruger Blackhawk to go with my 357 Henry. Maybe I just watch to many Westerns. :D

I had to get a 357 Blackhawk to go with my 357 BBB. Didn't seem right carrying my Beretta when shooting the Henry. Hopefully will have my Mernickle holster in a couple more weeks, will post photos when I get it.

All part of the fun. Love it, myself.

I always remind myself, though, that this tradition we observe with lever guns and single action revolvers is partly based on fact, yes, but a lot of it originates with our upbringing via the TV and the movies and those, in turn, were mostly based on the fictitious, sensationalized myths of the gunslinger we inherited from dime novels of the period.

Fact is, there were double action revolvers in the Old West and a lot of famous out laws and lawmen, alike, carried them. Wasn't all just Winchesters on the rifles, either. Historical accounts also showed that more men were gunned down by shotguns (more affordable than Colts or Winchesters) than by rifles or revolvers and gunfights were anything but the staged duels we saw on TV. And when some say putting a scope on a lever gun is heresy, just remember that scopes were used as far back as the Civil War. Hardly some new-fangled invention. Lastly, the Wild West didn't just tame up and go to sleep in the year 1900, as some may think. A lot of that period rolled on past the turn of the century into the era of 1911s, bolt action rifles and hammerless pump shotguns. Think the Nome gold rush, the Mexican Revolution with Pancho Villa and more.

Oh, yeah, it was fascinating time. Time to grab the lever gun and Colt and do some shooting. :)

It just makes sense on so many levels to be able to share ammo between your rifle and sidearm..........

I'm down to one lone Cimarron 357, now, for a single action revolver, because I've changed brands on my single action revolvers. Hope to add another Cimarron or Taylor, soon, though. Have a ways to go on the SAs to keep up with our lever guns.

I have a S/W 357 that I shoot mostly as a single action. But, my wife shoots it as a double. So, we both get what we want in one gun. 8-)

Very true. In my own state of Oregon the eastern part, basically East Central to the Idaho border was an area of 'late' homesteading with many of those arriving in the late 1800's and continuing on through the 1930s with many living what could be considered very 'primitive' existences. There isn't a lot of documentation on the history of this but Oregon was a state that did not receive a lot of population increase until this time frame and even then it wasn't a massive land rush. These people had very little and lived more reminiscent of a lifestyle of pioneers than what was available in larger areas. An excellent book exists written by an early Oregon homesteader named Rube Long called 'The Oregon Desert. It is an an anecdotal account of his life and and experiences growing up on the Oregon High Desert and he is buried on land he turned over to the state to create a State Park.

Here is my Ruger Bisley Super Blackhawk with a Simply Rugged Loaded Pancake holster. They are sitting on a hand sewn table cloth by my wife's grandmother. It must be around 80 years old.

Single action revolvers and lever guns are my favorite firearms. Here is my Big Boy, Super Blackhawks, and my wife's Henry .22 carbine:
