Inroduction and seeking guidance

I don't own a Henry YET! I have pistols but want to have a.22 rifle to target shoot/plink with, too. By way of into I am 72 years old so there are vision issues! I am going back/forth between the Small Game Rifle with the peep sight and the Octagon Barreled original with the Marbles rear sight. I do not have access to the SGR locally and would have to order it which means IT"S MINE no matter! I am not even sure I would like the large loop as I don't have large hands. I do not plan on doing any hunting but may do some pest control on out 44 acre property. Any assistance in making this decision would be greatly appreciated.

first, welcome to our forum, happy to have you join us .... we have bunches of members who have extensive experience with Henry's 22's, I'm sure they will be able to offer you excellent responses to your questions .... once you get your rifle, please take a look at our How Many ? thread (link below) and add it to our community's total

I'd go with the SGR with its Skinner rear peep sight - much easier to use than the buckhorns for us "older eye guys". I also think you'd learn to like the big lever - it's easier to work than the standard...

Funny you should post this as my friend of 50+ years recommended the other rifle! Ha!Ha! I don't think I'll be unhappy with either one and I'll keep you in the loop on which one I get. The peep sight is easier to use for us "old guys"? plus the big lever is easier to use. You guys really make it difficult to choose. BUT that's what makes a horse race---a difference of opinion.

Welcome to the forum from CT. I'd recommend the SGC, too. While a Skinner peep sight can be added to any of the other Henry's, the SGC comes with it already installed. I swapped out the Semi-Buckhorn rear sight on my H006M for a Skinner receiver mounted peep sight and don't regret it even a little bit. It's a great iron sight.

Welcome aboard, Redstickboy! You can't go wrong with any Henry .22, they're all fine rifles.
One thing I would consider is whether to go with the .22LR model or the .22WMR.
For cheap plinking and small game the .22LR is a good choice. For more power, it's hard to beat the .22WMR.
The 40 gn bullets will travel 50% faster and carry 3 times the energy of the LRs. I consider them powerful enough to deal with varmints as large as coyotes with good bullet placement, and have at least twice the effective range for hunting. The ammo costs a lot more, but once you've laid in a good supply you'll forget about the cost and enjoy a .22 that really cracks.
Still, the .22LR can chamber shorts as well as longrifles to provide even more fun. The magnum is magnum only.
For me it was easy to go with the magnum because I've been shooting them for decades.

Conax, Thanks for the words of encouragement. You nailed it with the drawback to the WMR option-cost of ammunition vs .22LR. I was dismayed when I saw how much a box of the rounds cost. Since I don't plan on actively hunting with the rifle, just target shooting and plinking I am leaning toward the .22LR model. Can't beat $.06/round!

For how you describe you'll be using the gun, I'd definitely go with a 22 LR. Love the 22 mag, but for us, it's a cartridge we shoot far less often than the 22LR. The mag is more of a dedicated hunting cartridge and much less a plinker. It's a cartridge to add once you have a 22 LR or two or three ...

Welcome to the group.
You probably already know there is a SGR (Small Game Rifle) and a SGC (Small Game Carbine). Rifle is a 20" barrel and the carbine is a 16.5" barrel. I have the SGC and really like it. The SGC is a little lighter, not that either are very heave. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be and I find the Skinner Peep Sights to work very well.
