I attended my first K day

Post by daytime dave » Sun Nov 05, 2017 8:28 am

I have always enjoyed collecting diecast cars. I frequent another site that is dedicated to hobbies. They have a large section regarding diecast. I learn quite a lot about all brands of cars. I recently learned that Kmart and Mattel have a Hot Wheels "event" three times a year. Kmart has Hot Wheels make some cars in a Kmart available only color and premieres some other cars at the event. I read about it and was interested.
I arrived at the store around 0830. There was one other man there and the store manager was setting up a folding table. It was scheduled to start at 0900. As time progressed, there were around 20 adults around the table. I was talking to a few fellows who were really knowledgeable about Hot Wheels. They explained what they collected and why. They were a pretty mixed group. A man and his wife arrived and they had their kids and the neighbor kids. It seemed the kids were there to enhance his chances of getting a case of cars to first look at. They were the only children at this event.

At 0900, the manager wheeled out a cart with three or four large boxes. Apparently, a normal case of Hot Wheels contains 72 cars. These Kday cases only had 36 cars each. There were 12 of the Kday cases. The manager then handed everyone who wanted at numbered ticket. He explained the rules, including there was no age limit, but the person had to select their own cars. Each person who's ticket was drawn would get five minutes to select five cars. Since there were 20 of us, the first 12 really had the best selection. I did not get in the group of 12.
Also, in the world of Hot Wheels, there is a thing known as a Treasure Hunt car, which is specially marked and somewhat rare. Then, there is the extremely rare Super Secret Treasure Hunt. These are special cars in very limited numbers. Normally, there is about one Super in every three or four cases. As the first 12 opened the boxes and examined the cars, someone spoke out that he had a Super. He showed it to everyone and continued to look at his box. After five minutes, the rest of us were handed a box and we could select as many as we wanted. I picked out one of each of the special Kmart cars and I found a Range Rover, the only car I had hoped to find. As I was looking through the cars, I got a tap on the back. Hey, aren't you the guy who wanted the Range Rover? I thanked him and told him I had one. He said he didn't want it and gave it to me. I thanked him. I enjoyed watching the people most of all. Some seemed to be there to get some special cars to sell on Ebay. Most were very serious collectors. I met a man who is also on the other forum. He was very nice young man who loves Hot Wheels. He is an avid collector. He was a pleasure to meet and talk to.
I ened up talking with the man who had gotten there first. He was a wealth of knowledge and a nice guy. I explained I knew what the "special" cars were, but would not normally choose them. I had gotten the car I was looking for. I told him that I liked the "Supers" but I was sure I'd never find one. He took one out of his pile of cars and said this was a Super. He had gotten it in his box, but didn't announce it. I said that that was the third one, as someone else got one and didn't say anything. He said it was very rare to have three Supers in that many boxes. Some events, no one got one.

I enjoyed my experience. I realized that I didn't care about some of the special cars and enjoyed collecting what I liked. I did get some tips on what to look for, if I was looking anyways. The cars I didn't care about could always be sold or traded. I advised the man I was more likely to give it to a real collector rather than anything else. We exchanged phone numbers and know what he likes. If I find it, I'll let him know. The collectors that were there were really into it, that was the best thing to see. I'm glad I went.

That's neat! My Dad used to collect key chains and shot glasses. I seem to collect firearms. Looking at the HotWheel cars reminds me of a time long ago. When I was a kid we had something similar called Matchbox cars. God, I feel old!!

Yes Al, I collect diecast planes and tanks too. I have more car brands than Hot Wheels and Matchbox. I have GreenLight, Johnny Lightening, AutoWorld and others. I have always liked diecast anything. My father always got me Matchbox cars when I was a kid. They kept me busy for hours. I also like the Ertl 1/64 farm tractors and implements.

I noticed on the packaging it said it was for those 3 and up. Remember Dave, don't eat them. Just kidding. I don't collect them but do have a few child's windup toys.

Man, that brings back memories. Congratulations on your special day.

Back in the late 60s, early 70s when I lived in Tampa Florida, my friends and I were all into Hot Wheels, and I mowed lawns to buy my Hot Wheels, and I bought Mine from Kmart. LOL. We all bought the cars, the track, the various hot wheels accessories. Unlike all my friends, I bought cars to play with, and cars to save, never opened, still in the package. I had more than 100 cars when we moved. I sealed them in a moving box, marked them with my name, and put them in the attic. The other thing I collected, paying for them with my mowing and lawn care money... were Joe's. I collected the GI Joe team members and their equipment and accessories. ;)

I had enough hot wheel track to run all thru the house and back to the front screen porch. We had the battery powered "power house" with the spinning drive wheels, you run the cars thru, they shoot the cars OUT the other side and zip them along the track. Between the four of us, we could space them along my track and run the cars all thru the house and back to the porch. Suddenly, the cars failed to return, and we went to investigate? :? We followed the track thru the living room. No problem. Dining room and kitchen and back out. No problem. ;) Down the hall and thru my parent's and sister's rooms. Hmmm. We went back down the hall and into my room, and the track ran under my bed and out the other side.... Ah... ... there was a pile of cars, and the problem. :x My two Siamese cats were laying on either side of the track, slapping the cars off for sport as they came out from under the bed. :D :) .

What great memories.... 8-)

There is a much worse memory associated with the GI Joe and Hot Wheels however...
I returned from my time in Boot Camp and my A Schools, having bought a house in North Carolina off base and came home to gather my things from the attic now that I had a place to put them all, rather than a shared room in the barracks. Climbing in the attic and crawling to that tucked away corner where I had stored all my boxes, I noticed that three boxes were missing... Mad Magazines, old and worn and of no real value except the memories of shared hours with friends... but the other two...

A box of full size GI Joe Figures and all their accessories, and a box of more than 100 Hot Wheels, half never opened, still in the packages; many limited editions. (Two stand out) The Mongoose and Snake Rails and Funny Car sets. I asked my Mother what had happened to the boxes I had stored in the corner and she said she had been "organizing" the attic and seen my boxes in the corner and opened each of the sealed boxes to see what they contained. (Mom was never one for personal boundries.) When she saw the old magazines she tossed those, but the toys, she gave to a friend of hers with young kids, six or seven year olds. They were thrilled. They "ripped those packages open like it was Christmas." :o

I wasn't happy... she couldn't understand why. They were just kids toys.
You can tell a lot about the character of a man...
by the way he treats those who can do nothing for him.

I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.

Here is a picture of a die cast truck that at one time I drove. It belongs to the company owner. Our company colors are not the same. We are supposed to be getting more in if I get some in I will send one your way. Al
