Right now Im trying to find a target type load for my all weather because I have a bowling pin type swinging target set up I like to shoot at. This is how I am able to shoot 50 rounds at one time. There not hunting type loads or I would not be able to do that. Al

understood on mortar rounds .... both local ranges I have access to are setup for shots up to +/-125 yards .... we have plans to hang some various size gongs on one, the other is pretty much for punching paper .... to drive a 300+ grain bullet in a fairly flat trajectory over a 100+ yards takes a good bit of oooomph and with a 45-70 produces a good bit of recoil .... don't get me wrong I enjoy firing reduced recoil cowboy action level loads and have sent several hundred HSM's down shorter ranges .... but, with my blood thinning meds, even those rounds can cause bruising .... I thoroughly enjoy shooting and like to see big holes in the target

The stuff I've been loading lately is accurate and lighter than the HSM cowboys. Great at 50 yds. Haven't spent a lot of time at 100 with them yet. But what I've done has been OK. Just need to add some elevation to the rear sight.

My late brother was a yuge fan of the cartridge. He had a Marlin and one of those fancy rolling block Sharps replicas from Italy.
He would shoot up 60 rounds without even a flinch.
I could handle the 300 and 325 grn bullets, those 405's and up were making my jaw hurt. He would just say, "don't be such a p***y."
I like my pistol cartridges for their painless fun.

If I was to buy a Henry, I'd like to have that stainless model with the blackened wood. That thing is gorgeous.

The secret to firing 45-70 is to stand, when you sit the full recoil goes to the shoulder, standing the whole upper body moves. Cut some sticks about 6ft long each and Lash into a tripod about 1 ft down using 550 cord that is wrapped near the apex with a small dish towel to pad the rifle. This is an effective shootin "stand". I usually fire 60 to 70 rounds at an outing and if you miss the target you can tell real quick whose fault it is , the gun the ammo or you ("me")
