Henry 2018

Post by Hidden Mortimer » Mon Oct 09, 2017 7:38 pm

I’m debating wether I should get a new Henry in 45-70 now or wait until they announce what they’ll bring for next year. Anyone knows when the new catalog (2018) will come out, or when they’ll announce new stuff?

Should be soon I think. I'd wait and see what they have....

Im not sure there will be anything new in the 45-70 line with all the models they offer right now. I think there going to be concentrating on what there behind on right now and doing good to get those out. JMHO. Al

Well... this year is almost over and Henry still does not have the new for 2017 stuff in the stores. I’m thinking they will likely not be announcing much new for 2018.

JEBar, I thought I wanted a 45-70 CCH but the more I look at it the less I like the length of the mag tube. It just doesn’t look right to me. Maybe if it was one round shorter I think it would look better, so I was just hoping that Henry would make some little changes. Even a full length mag would be good with me. Another small change would be a shorter foregrip. I might be the only one that feels like this. I’m just weird I guess. I also prefer hatchbacks instead of sedans if that makes any sense. I might be asking for too much but you never know. I’ll hold off (if I can) until january’s Shotshow and see what they do. If nothing new then I’ll get whatever they have available, must likely the CCH.

who knows, they may one day offer a carbine version of the CCH 45-70 .. :?: .. I'm pretty sure the length of a 45-70 ammo plays a part in the consideration of the length of the magazine tube .... ours holds 4 rounds .... after thinking about it, I don't think I'd want one that held less .... in addition, weight plays a significant part in felt recoil .... I'm really looking forward to hearing comments about recoil from folks who purchase the single shot model .... I've been on blood thinning meds for years and don't see that changing .... consequently, I bruise pretty easy .... fed full power loads, a 45-70 right out of the box, has a formidable recoil .... folks who can fire the brass models that don't come with a recoil pad have my respect .... ours has several upgrades that are designed to reduce felt recoil and without them, there would have to be a grizzly filling up the scope before I'd pull the trigger .... with the mods I can (and do) fire 20 or more in a session without bruising .... I sure hope Henry continues expands their 45-70 line but have no clue how they can do so

Yeah you’re right, the only thing they can do really is different barrel lengths and maybe magazine capacity. Other than that I don’t know. Either way I’m getting a Henry in 45-70 and it’ll be awesome.

I recently purchased a new 1895 Marlin in .45-70gvt.
I know, it's not a Henry, but after the rebate I have less than $400 invested.

I put 3 rounds downrange before deciding I needed a different recoil pad.
I put on a grind-to-fit Limbsaver brand pad designed specifically for magnums.

Now the limiting factor in my .45-70 range time is not my sore shoulder, but my quickly diminishing wallet contents!
I could easily run 20 rounds without discomfort.
I've just gotten into reloading but have not loaded any .45-70 to date.
It won't be long now though. I have powders, primers and projectiles, just generating some empty cases now...

My only wish list from Henry would be a 16" barrel 45-70 "Trapper" model, similar to the limited production M@rl1n 1895 STP Trapper.

that got me to thinking so I just took a look at the hundred round 45-70 ammo box I take to the range .... its 43 rounds short, I honestly didn't realize I fired that many last time .... 10 hunting level 300g loads, 10 hunting level 400g loads, 10 hunting level 500g loads and the rest were 405g lead practice loads .... didn't realize I'd fired that many .... there is no way I could have done that with our CCH Henry as it came out of the box

1. replaced OEM recoil pad with the top of the line Kick-eez recoil pad

2. inserted a 3" mercury recoil suppressor in the stock

3. had it Mag-na-ported

I've been using a combination of such upgrades since the 70's and it has consistently yielded significant reduction in felt recoil in a variety rifles and shotguns .... individually, each has proven to make a positive reduction .... collectively, that reduction is magnified .... as noted, I've used them with such rifles as a bolt action 300 WBY Mag and 3 light weight (synthetic stock) 30-06's .... in addition 2 Remington 11-87 12 gauges .... you can find a good bit more info using the forum search feature with such words as Mag-na-port, mercury recoil suppressor, and/or Kick-eez

The number one modification you can do to a 45/70 is to load lights loads! Get the FPS down between 1,000 + 1,250 fps and you can shoot it all day.

I do regularly and I have a brass one! I do wear a recoil pad now though.

I have some hot cruise missiles as well for it. But for range work they aren't really necessary and can be punishing.

This is exactly what I do. Im not one who likes to shoot mortars to have a good time with my 45-70's. Right now Im trying to find a target type load for my all weather because I have a bowling pin type swinging target set up I like to shoot at. This is how I am able to shoot 50 rounds at one time. There not hunting type loads or I would not be able to do that. Al
