Busy Work in the Shop...

But MUCH needed busy work. Reorganization of a few things to make them easier to access.

I was looking for a certain tool I knew I had, and opened a drawer in the rolling box that my Planer is on, and ... wow... I forgot I had these chisels. I had bid on a set of VERY nice English Mortise Chisels in a Charity Auction, simply because no one had been bidding, and once I bid, others started. Miss Tina asked about the chisels and I told her that they were SWEET... she said that the money helps the guys in need on my woodworking forum, If I wanted them, bid. I mentally set a limit, and after a couple back and forth bids, Bid the limit and forgot about it. I won them and they came just before Christmas and I put them in that drawer... meaning to find a way to fit them in the chisel drawer later. And .... because of a favor or two, someone sent me a set of carving chisels... they went in the same drawer, and I "meant" to find space for them....

Time to reorganize... today I spent the day splitting the "fine tools" drawer from ONE drawer to two. It became a fine tools drawer and a chisel drawer. I also have a separate drawer for "working" chisels to use around the farm, outside the workshop.

Now, it looks like this:
A single drawer just for the Woodworking chisels where the blades need to be protected and you could shave with them.

Another drawer for the specialty woodworking tools, like the special bits that drill counter sunk holes for knife hardware, special tools to get into the corners of boxes, punches and hand countersinks, and more...

and the drawer for JUST beat around chisels for farm work, ....

The labeling of the drawers came after the anesthesia from all those unexpectedly long surgeries really affected my memory and I got tired of pulling open the dang drawers trying to find the one filled with screwdrivers. With two banks of drawers knowing one held punches... sheesh...

If I rearrange a couple drawers, WD40 or Hoppes takes the sharpie marker off. Then re-label as needed.

Back at it this morning, with sorting and cleaning in the shop again. I have some leftover pans from the hospital that I toss random "crap" into to deal with later. Nuts, bolts, screws, other hardware and stuff I "might" need another day. I decided that this morning was going to be "Later" and sorted thru all of it. I tossed that which wasn't in decent shape or that which I figured I would never use. The rest was finally put away and I vowed to quit tossing stuff in the pan. Funny thing, I put the pan back under the bench...

I also made another block for the CHISEL drawer, to keep the wood carving chisels straight.. Yeah, I couldn't just let them lay there. Bothered me all evening after I went inside, and that was the very FIRST thing I did in the shop this morning.

Now all the stuff in that drawer will stay nice and neat and none of the chisels will bang together and dull a sharpened edge.
Sharpening these is a detailed process. You lap the back to insure it's flat, then true the cutting face on the coarse stone to take out any nicks, then sharpen on the 1000 grit, 4000 grit, and 8000 grit waterstones.... then a final polish on the leather strop with the buffing compound applied. Those babies cut then! See why I want to protect the edges!
