Pistol case in rifle / powders

Post by Oksrt » Sun Oct 01, 2017 11:48 pm

Strictly hypothetical!!! Some pistol cartridges can loose velocity in longer rifle bbl, in theory. Could a slower powder be used to increase velocity say in 44 mag, such as re7 or 4198 if pressures allowed? Would that allow velocity to incease further ?
Hypothetically. Not planning to blow up a rifle to find out.

I'm going to tell there more to it then just powder . I put 60 thousand free bore in this XP100 when I built it to burn more powder . My 308 rifle with a 22 inch barrel was only 175 fps faster then my XP100 with a 14 inch with the same ammo using IMR 3031 powder

I would think that in a true pistol caliber case, like 44 mag, that you would run of out room for rifle powders before you got anywhere close to the velocity achievable with magnum pistol calibers. There is a reason most rifle cartridges are necked. It provides room for all that powder. Look how much room a .308 cartridge has for powder. Now look at a .357 magnum case. They both have about the same weight bullet. When I use slower pistol powders like 4227, I run out of room in a .357 case, before I max out on powder.
There is, I think, humor here which does not translate well from English to sanity. - Sanya

Thanks , this was a late night thought i needed help with. Case capacity, freebore, fast barrels, etc. totally forgot about the velocity of my tc in 309 jdj with 150 gr bullets.
