New owner with a question.

Hello from England friends . Ok so after much saving and anticipation I drove the 280 mile round trip to buy my new henry brass bb in .44 yesterday and it's a lovely looking rifle.
I have a thing for lever guns and already own a couple of marlins but I handled and shot my friends .357 bb and was very impressed with the quality.
So after getting home and having a more thorough look at the rifle I shined a flashlight down the barrel and noticed the rifling just below the crown looks rough as hell and seems to stop about 6mm from the end of the barrel .
Now everyone knows the crown is pretty important with regards to accuracy and this dosent look good .

Can anyone show the end of their barrel for a comparison?
I'm so dissapointed and frustrated I was so exited ,I always get this kind of deal.

It doesn't look very pretty, but I don't think it will be a problem. The proof of the pudding will be in the eating - er, sorry - shooting. If there is a problem, take it back to the dealer.

I agree with Les .... with the complications of being across the pond, my recommendation is to fire it .... if it performs as you anticipate, I wouldn't worry about it .... if it doesn't I'd take it back .... if you want more info from folks who know, I'd email the picture you posted to Henry customer support .... please take a look at our How Many ? thread (link below) and add your Henry to our community's total

Sure sorry that your first post had to be sharing your discouragement about the crown/barrel in your new Henry. It kind of hits home for me, because the last 2-3 weeks I've been working with Henry CS and repair service on barrel problems and ammo feed problems with my Henry BBS .357 carbine. Just got it back from Henry shop in Rice Lake, WI (where my rifle was "born"). The barrel looks much better, and initially the lever action cycles better. I haven't tried loading ammo yet, and will head to the range later this week to test everything out.

But back to your issue. I would probably follow Les' suggestion to take it back to the dealer. Not being in England, I don't know what it would take to have your Henry shipped for repairs to the U.S. location where it was made. Still, I would send those photos you took to one of the Henry techs listed on their website. Agree with the others here that the problem doesn't look good at all. Something definitely happened when Henry worked that bore. But you took some excellent photos, and I think Henry should see them.

I'm certain Henry will go after this and fix to your satisfaction. Keep us posted on what happens, and best wishes for good success!

Welcome to the forum from CT. You've been given some very good advice about what to do regarding that barrel. The good news is that you bought a Henry. You may need to go through your dealer, but Henry will make it right.

Sorry to hear you are having issues with your new Henry. That should never have made it past Henry's QC, but, unfortunately, these things happen with mass production. I just looked at my .357 BBS, and I can tell you the crown looks nothing like yours. While I am sure Henry CS will take care of your issue, living in England will undoubtedly complicate the process. Good luck. +1 on letting Henry know where you live when you talk to them.

My only concern JEBar is, even if it's a tack driver, will this effect resale value?

Sorry to hear about this, I dont blame you for being upset. I know I wouldnt even think to check that before I bought one. But I think a lesson for me is learned here check them over closer before purchasing. But I would do as suggested by others send the pictures to Anthony and see what he says. I just went to my basement and looked at my BB's and none of them look like that. Im sure since you live out of the US that it will be a longer wait but I hope it all works out. Al

HRA seems to be very responsive to customer concerns. I personally would not accept it like it is, and would contact them. If memory serves, there's a letter from Anthony Imperato in the box when you open it, and he says to contact them if you are not satisfied.

I have decided to make the journey and try and return it to the seller . It's a shame the rifle looks and feels great. I won't even bother to shoot it as even if it shoots good I will always wonder if it could shoot really good without the mangled rifling.
I'm so dissapointed but I will ask if they can order me a diffrent one and give it a second chance .

if you aren't happy with what they tell you .... you can most certainly contact Anthony Imperato (owner Henry Firearms) .... another option that I really believe is worth exploring is to email Dan@henryusa.com .... Dan does an exceptional job of handling issues

I had to get mine recrowned as out of the box it was awful and shot real bad, hopefully yours will be ok but if in any doubt contact Viking arms, the main importer of Henry, find them on the web, they are up north and are great to deal with, they were as nice as could be and offered to sort mine out for me but where I live being a six hour drive away I got gunsmith friend to recrown it, did it as a favour so no big deal.
Its a shame though, I bought mine believing in the quality as well but I guess one or two get through, I have to say that now mine is sorted I would never part with it.

Ohh was your crown similar in appearance to mine ? Wonder if we got a bad batch or something.when was yours made ?

Hi my friend, mine is in the bag ready to go out in ten mins but I had it around January this year and my crown was ragged as hell, awful looking, I think the innaccuaracy I was getting though was more to do with the ammo. It just would not shoot the factory ammo available here so handloads were the only thing I could do and now it shoots like a dream. If I was you I would contact Viking and show them the pics, they were very nice to me and keen to do anything to help. These things play on your mind so I would let them exchange it personally. Because I have a gunsmith for a friend it was an easy fix for me as I did not fancy the journey to Viking and he was confident he could sort it out. Keep me posted how you get on,

Ok so it was bugging me so much I decided to take the day off and drove all the way back to the shop I got it from . They inspected it and were very understanding and helpful then contacted the importer and they are going to exchange it for another one , apparently a few weeks turnaround ( we shall see) . So I will put in another variation for the caliber to be added to my licience witch usually takes a couple of weeks here .
I will let you know what happens.( I hope they pull me out a really nice one for the trouble )

Hi JEBar, no the shop gunsmith was very surprised and shocked when he inspected the rifle as the Henry's are normally good . I must admit I didn't look that hard other than a rudimentary check how the action worked and fit and finish as it was a Henry. Should have looked down the barrel ....would have saved me a tank of fuel.
