Hurricane Harvey

We're 4 hours from Houston. It started raining off and on today. One good rain, the rest has been light showers. Shakey, I hope you're home doesn't flood. Attached is a photo of an intersection in Houston, the traffic lights are normally 16-17 feet tall.

the news coverage of the devastation caused by Harvey continues to be hard to fathom .... stories of neighbors helping neighbors come as no surprise; in fact, it would be hard to believe that it wouldn't be happening .... seeing folks in private boats going house to house trying to help evacuate stranded people is heart warming indeed

We're okay so far. We've had over 20" of rain and started coming down hard again about 15 minutes ago. There are voluntary evacuations going on in nearby subdivisions but so far water has come up to the house but not in.

I hope you keep that water at bay. If not, I hope you get help from the Cajun Navy. I saw a news article on something called that. Guys in lines hauling their boats to come help. That is the spirit of neighbors I was brought up on.

Looks like it's SLOWLY moving away from Sugarland with the dry air west of the system.

I don't think you're in for much more than you got now Jake with most of the rain to your east, moving away.

The comparisons & descriptions of the Harvey flooding devastation in the news reports has helped me to "visualize" how immense this disaster is. I just turned off my morning news after I heard that America now has a "sixth Great Lake" (and hopefully that will be only temporary). It was reported that the size of the TX flooding is at least as large as Lake Michigan, if not larger. I lived for a lot of years near Lake Michigan, swam in it as a kid, and when older have boated there also. It gives me an idea of the size of the TX disaster; but I still cannot imagine having cars and home and property overwhelmed/inundated by that much water!!

Last night our men's small prayer group from church prayed for the numerous folk impacted by this hurricane....and for all those who are helping people. Shakey Jake, hope that flooding gets no deeper than what is seen in your photos. Take care, and be safe.

I tend to dismiss the instructions from (officials ).They are the government right??? we're here to help. those are the most terrifying word from any "government employee". You have to take all of the conditions where you live and the event that is approaching weigh the effects on you and your property. For example.. did you build in or near a flood plain?,down stream from a dam? Live in an area that the demographics are different from you, food, supplies ,power, sewer, next to a chemical plant? RR tracks? Build your dream home on the side of a volcano?....Well to make the short story long If I could not survive a few weeks at home on my little "island" I wuda been gone already.

I'm happy to report that we fared well. We didn't get any water in the house. We live far enough away from the levees (Oyster Creek and Brazos River) that I don't think there will be a problem. The only issue that I have right now is we can't get out. All the surface streets surrounding the subdivision are under water. It will be a day or two before we can get to a store if needed. We got a weeks worth of supplies last Friday morning before things went to hell. The only thing I regret is not buying more beer!! Thanks for all the concern. My concern now is for all my friends and clients that have lost everything. One thing the TV isn't reporting is the number of people who lost roofs due to tornadoes and high wind. The Sienna Plantation subdivision is where I have some friends living and they lost roofs Friday night due to a tornado and then to have their homes flooded as well. Talk about getting kicked when down.

I would think if you're unemployed and can't find a job, you're headed to Houston; plenty of jobs there.

After Hurricane Charley, I flew into central Florida and all you could see were the "blue roofs" to the horizon (tarps).

I imagine it took roofers years to catch up.

Insurance companies tend to unload flooded cars in other areas where people aren't suspecting flood damage. My neighbor bought one a long time ago before CARFAX.

I didn't think about it until this morning but the range I use, American Shooting Centers, is next to the Addicks reservoir. I'm sure it's flooded so I may not be able to go sight in that new Henry .327 Federal Mag for a few weeks as per their web site:

because of Harvey, my wife and daughter just finished taking 5 vehicles over to fill them with gasoline .... not that we expect any storm related issues with infrastructure in our area; in fact, none is expected .... a substantial portion of our country's refining and storage facilities are located in the Corpus Christi area .... if as projected, they have an 11' or better storm surge, the damage to all structures could be significant .... if so, supplies will be disturbed for a while and prices will rise quickly ...worse case, we have a good bit of gas on hand that will be burned all too quickly

well, the prediction above has sure come true for us .... in our area (just south of Raleigh, NC) gasoline prices have risen 30 to 50 cents a gallon and diesel has risen about 30 cents a gallon

Harvey's rain has moved into our area in central NC .... thankfully, he's only a reflection of his former self .... that said, his rain is coming down hard enough to kill our satellite TV signal

Can't find a station here that even has gasoline. Those that do have to wait to have their tanks checked to make sure there's no water in them. Trucks are line up at the factory waiting their turn to get filled. I heard on the noon news that it will take to mid-October for operations to get back to normal. Who knows if it's gouging or not.
