Henry Original Quality Issues

Post by coz375 » Thu Aug 17, 2017 7:18 pm

I bought my first Henry about a month ago and now I have four including a Henry Original in 45 Colt.
I have a FFL license so the rifle was delivered directly to me from my distributor. When I opened the box and took the rifle out I noticed a big tarnished thumb print on the polished brass butt plate. I was able to take care of that with Flitz. I also noticed that the butt plate screws were mangled, picture attached. I contacted Henry and they sent me new screws quickly. I installed the new screws with the correct screw driver that I bought from Henry and that problem was fixed. I looked at the disassembly video and discovered that the lever lock is supposed to have a detent. Mine didn't because it was not adjusted properly, that picture is also attached. I took the stock off and adjusted it myself. The other thing I noticed and, unfortunately, I can't fix it and that is a small spot of rust on the barrel that left pitting. That picture is also attached.

I e-mailed all of this to Mr. Imperato. I don't want anything except to know how he will insure that a $2000 rifle that is the flagship of his line doesn't get to the consumer in this condition.

I love the gun. It shoots great, it is very symbolic of a very interesting time in American firearm history, and I want to take a white tail with it one time. I'm not going to send it back or give it up for anything. I was expecting a perfect rifle, but what the hell I'm not perfect either.

coz, that sure is strange. I'm almost thinking that even though your rifle came directly from the distributor, that perhaps it was returned to the distributor by another dealer and mistakenly sold to you as new. You would be very hard pressed to get me to believe that someone at the Henry factory boogered up some screws like that and then let it go out to a distributor.

The box was sealed when I got it. I had the rifle on back order for some time.
I included the serial number in my e-Mail to Henry. We'll see what happens and I'll post any replies that I might get, but I will contact my distributor tomorrow.

That is unfortunate for sure. I know that when I picked up my 1860 Cimarron Henry I was able to inspect it first. It was flawless. I agree that $2000 is a very expensive rifle and I would expect it to be pristine coming out of the box. My experience with HRA is that they want you to be satisfied. I believe each new rifle comes with a letter from Mr. Imperato stating that. My Big Boy did. Personally I would call Anthony Imperato and speak to him directly. I would bet he'll look after you.

I sent Mr. Imperato an e-Mail with the above pictures. I just want him to be aware of what got passed his QC. I'm not looking for any remedy. I'm not even looking for a response. I absolutely will not return the rifle. I'm kind of attached to it already. I bought the 45 Long Colt because of the availability of many types of jacketed standard pressure ammo. I bought a lot of it already because I want, as I said, to take one white tail with it. I will be chonographing ammo and looking for the most effective and most accurate ammo available. I'm worthless with a post and notch sight so I already replaced the stock sight with a Skinner peep made for the 1860. I'm very good with a peep sight.

Checked with my distributor today and the rifle came directly from Henry. Kind of wish that wasn't so.

I guess Bubba somehow managed to get hired at Henry. He gets around. :)

It can happen anywhere, but you are right, on the flagship and namesake rifle, it should not have.

Please keep us posted.

But ditto who is Bubba, the assembler or the inspector?

Sometimes things happen on the factory floor, it's the reason you assure quality in the first place.

To me, this lies at the feet of the inspector; it's why he/she's there. Then again, we're all human.

I did get a response from Mr. Imperato. It is below:

Thank you Sir for your ongoing support, we are certainly grateful. We will
get you the screws. Jeff@henryusa.com is handling.

Sincerely,

I received the screws a week before I sent the e-mail. I e-mailed customer service, about the screws, the day I got the rifle. I mentioned that in my e-mail to Mr. Imperato. I guess I didn't make that clear.

Anyway, it's all good. Like I said before I wouldn't return the rifle for anything and I wasn't looking for any remedy other then new screws. My purpose in contacting HRA was just to make them aware.

You are absolutely right. We are all human. Like I said before, I'm not perfect why should I expect anything that I buy to be.

Received another e-mail from HRA.

Thank you for owning a Henry rifle. Glad to hear you received your screws and
successfully replaced them. Sorry to hear about the pitting issue you are
having with the H011C.

To determine the cause and corrective action to repair the rifle, we would like
to bring it back for our gunsmith to inspect and repair under warranty.

We will send you a UPS label to cover the cost of shipping the rifle, and which
includes insurance. Please reply to this message, including the previous e-mail
chain, with the following information:
- name,
- physical return address,
- rifle model #,
- rifle serial #,
- daytime phone #,
- your choice of receiving UPS label by either e-mail or regular US Mail,
- e-mail address if you prefer e-mail delivery.

I think this is a very nice offer, but like I said I'm not going to return my rifle. It is fine and I'm extremely happy with it.

I can understand you not wanting to send the rifle back but consider that for a minor inconvenience to you, another future owner might be spared a lot of problems and H.R.A. will know what to be more careful of on the assembly line.

I understand what you are saying, but I hope that my e-mail to Anthony and the pictures that I sent him would accomplish the same goal.
