Rc I've been shooting them out of a marlin guide gun, they cycle fine. I've probably killed a dozen or so elk with them. The issue I have with them is their construction. I take broadside shots hitting only rib bone on occasion. I don't find very big pieces of the bullet when field dressing. The biggest piece is usually the copper jacket. All dead elk of coarse I just wish they held together a bit better.

interesting observation .... does this mean you find they do not penetrate sufficiently to create an exit wound ?

I think it hinges on a how squarely they hit a rib goin In. If they slip between the ribs they will pass through. Retention and penetration vary according to how squarely they hit a rib on entry. All have ended in a dead elk fortunately, but it makes me wonder about hitting a heavier bone.

They cycle just fine in my All Weather. Dennis I have read what you have experienced. The bullets tend to fragment alot and dont hold together but like you said they are recovering them out of animals that are dead. I just mentioned this in the first place as an alternative to someone who doesnt reload. I reload and would rather shoot one of my hunting loads than Hornadys. But not all people reload and it does take some time to develop a load for the hunting gun. Sometimes one gets lucky and runs across a load right away. Then other times it take 2 or 3 trips to the range to find one that works. Al

I well remember bear hunting in the thick woods of NC's Smoky Mountains with my grandfather back when the Winchester 30-30 and Marlin 35 were the kings of the woods in our area and the 30-06 we coming on the scene .... my grandfather took more bear and deer than I'll ever see with his 30-30 .... I still have it and our oldest son is bound and determined to be the third generation to take a deer with it .... anyway, my grandfather scoffed at the concept of a bullet blasting all the way through .... he said once the bullet exited all of the energy it expended was wasted .... he wanted his bullets to expend its energy inside the animal

I must say, hunting hogs was the furthest thing from my mind on my honeymoon. I was hunting for something a bit more...delicate. To each his own, tho.

That's why I picked em BigAl. I dont reload and the dang things shoot good out of my gun! I think on his hog hunt this round would be fine and so would his fusion round that his gun likes. I don't think you could go wrong either way.

They will hammer those hogs. I have seen them shot with some on You tube the hogs were hog gone.

Ok guys, think I might need to change up mg ammo. Got the gun back from Henry with a new barrel to fix the lever pop issue. Took it out to the range and really couldn't hold the accuracy I could before. I don't think the new barrel likes the federal fusions anymore.. I was going to pick up a couple boxes of power shoks, but it's there another brand that they like? Really don't have the ability to drop 60 a box on buffalo bore.... Anyone used armscor?

Have you tried any of the Winchester Super-x 300 JHP they sell at Walmart for about $33/box (around here, anyway). This ammo works pretty good in our H010CC. I would imagine that this round would knock the stuffing out of a hog inside of 100 yds....

It's in my shopping cart on midwayusa.com. along with federal power shoks. Just wondering if there's anything else that I might have good luck with.

is there a Cabela's in your area ? .... they handle HSM ammo and as noted early in this thread, they really perform well in our Henry 45-70 .... if I didn't reload, I'd stick with HSM's

Keep in mind hogs aren't that tough. Got a buddy that kills em on the regular with his 220 swift. Used to watch our butcher kill em in the slaughter room with a 22lr. Hope you can find a round your revamped gun likes!

Your 45-70 is more than ample , I’ve killed hundreds of pigs , many with a 223 so I agree with Dennis H. You will be fine with any 45-70 rounds
