Lightening the BB Trigger............

Post by Petey » Sat Jun 03, 2017 10:14 am

Took my new BBS 357 to the range yesterday.
Put about twenty rounds down range , packed it up and went home.
I hate the trigger! I comes in at an average of 5 pound 2 ounces which,to me, is akin to pulling over a brick wall.
Certainly more heavy than my BBB 357.
A search of the internet has revealed no information on the subject. Can't even find a replacement trigger return spring.
Not at all certain if Henry can do anything about it , I'll call and ask.
However: This is something I would rather remedy myself and not have to send my rifle back.
I hoping someone here can help me out.

Happy Shootin!

it would be interesting to call Henry and ask what it is supposed to be .... I have no clue what the actual trigger pull is on any of our (3) Henry rifles ... all I know is, none stands out as being heavier or lighter than the others and whatever the number may be, its fine with us

My BBS 357s trigger measured in a 5lbs and 14ozs. It's back at Henry for an accuracy issue and I asked them to adjust the trigger as well.
We'll see if they do.

Whooeeee.. A six pound trigger is a deal breaker for me.
most of my rifles are in the 1 pound or less depending on it's purpose.
I do have one other at 3.5 and one at 3.9 pounds. That's the limit for me. My BBB is just fine.
Just surprises me that as long as these have been out no one has a spring kit or anything.....there is a shim kit = not needed.

keep us posted on the accuracy and trigger issues .

My BBS 357 has an unusual quirk. The pull is fairly light, have not measured it yet. The trigger travels a couple mm and I feel a slight detent/click. I can hold it there and fire with a very slight pull. It is like a staging point. I do not know if it will continue, but it is interesting for now. I have only put a hundred or so rounds through it so far and am really liking it. Good luck getting yours to a satisfying point.
Remember, it's not how many guns you have. It's how many bullets you have.

Don't have a BB, but do have an H009 .30-30. It has an excellent trigger. I wonder if the BB rifles are made the same? Seems strange that the trigger wouldn't be good.

I didn't say the trigger wasn't good.....simply not to my liking.
Triggers are like pizza.......everyone likes it. Not all like it the same way.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder if the Wild West Trigger Happy kit would work in a Henry. It's made for Marlins, but there are a lot of similarities between Marlin and Henry lever rifles.

Mine is a clean break. No excessive travel. No grittiness. Pretty decent for a factory trigger. Mine is 4# 14 oz. Don't intend to do a thing about it. More to shooting accurately than trigger pull weight. Mine is a BBS carbine 357 mag.

I should also add that many of the 'greats' from yesteryear thought 4# was an ideal trigger pull weight for hunting weapons. I would agree.

Four pounds would be better than the five I have now.

Got busy today and didn't have time to call Henry....
I set a reminder for tomorrow to call and ask the good folks at Henry what if anything can be done.

Alright .
Well, I just got off the phone with the amazing people at Henry....
He was most pleasant and straight up , which I greatly appreciate.

So I ask if there is anything in house Henry can do to lower my trigger pull? The answer was no and the person I spoke with suggested I take it to a GS.
In Addition: The CSR was not aware of any spring kits available that would address the issue. I then asked if he would send me a couple of trigger springs to experiment with = Sure!
So , Now I get to play with some springs , get some measurements and see what I can come up with.
But don't hold your breath!.....I'm bogged down right now......trying to finish a remodel that should have been done 14 months ago = Wife is patiently waiting . With Bat in hand............. ;)

So there it is.

Keep us posted when you do get some time. Really glad to hear that the CSR was happy to send some springs.

I would much prefer a trigger that is lighter than 5lbs as well.

not surprised in the least at your report on Henry's customer service .... sadly, I'm also not surprised in the least that they won't do anything in house to lighten the trigger pull .... the reason has nothing to do with mechanics, it has to do with liability .... that is the same reason they specifically recommend using only factory loaded ammo .... if they lighten a trigger pull and the firearm later should fire under circumstances where any sort of harm took place, there will be legions of lawyers lined up to milk every cent possible from the manufacture .... I've been told by two different gunsmiths that they have similar concerns when asked to reduce trigger pull .... decades ago I had some trigger work done on various rifles and three different revolvers .... I'm glad I did, don't know if it would still be possible today .... specifically with Henry, I have to keep in mind that they are not custom made, they are mass produced .... secondly, they are not designed to be precision, long range firearms .... the good news is, ours are all far more accurate than I'm capable of shooting, for me that's all I can ask

The trigger on my BBS 357 was almost 6lbs. I had to send it back to Henry for a bad barrel and asked them to lighten the trigger as well. We'll see if they are able to do it. If not it will go to a gunsmith. 6lbs is way too much.

I got my rifle back from Henry. I had sent it in for a barrel issue and asked them to lighten my almost 6lb trigger. They did in fact lighten the trigger to the 4+lb range.
I had previously asked our range gunsmith about a trigger job and he said he could get it around 4lbs as well.

Good to hear . After reading your post I called Henry again.
They held fast - No trigger work , unless the trigger exceeded their spec (for 357 bb - bbs ) 6lb max .
As for my springs. There was no order on record... The previous CSR Dropped the ball . No notes, no nothing . So the CSR I was speaking with could not determine who I had spoke with last. Some people.
Anyhow: This CSR assured me he would send out some springs .. Till then I'm just trying to survive the heat.

Howdy All!
It's been a little while... been busy trying to get this remodel done.
Had some time last week to play with the BBS and see what I could with the trigger. Also wanted to spend some time with it and test before I shared any info.
So here we go. Lightening the trigger on a BB === stupid easy.
Oh ya.. No pics = Photobucket wants money for me to post third party = a finger to them.
I was able to safely drop my pull weight from 5# 2 oz . to 3 # 14 oz. just better than a 20 % reduction.

1) Remove the stock .
2) remove the trigger / main spring . Simply push the keeper forward and wiggle it out along with the spring.
3) Hold the spring in a pair of pliers , using micro torch heat the last coil on one end and collapse it by pressing the spring against a solid surface.
repeat with other end of spring. No need to quench . Just let it cool.
4) Re-assemble your BB and enjoy.

Just for reference, my bbb unmodified - as from factory has a 3# pull. I figured for a brush gun 4 #'s or just slightly lighter is just fine.
Additionally: The rifle was cocked and the butt slammed into the floor multiple times immediately after reassembly and several times since...never any
unwanted let offs.

Shortening the spring reduces the pre-load (does not make a spring softer) and gives the effect of a softer spring.

There you go . Simple , easy and we're on our way.

Happy Shootin To All!!
