Congrats, Cofisher....the Henry steel BB .357 is an excellent rifle choice.

Your rear peep looks great, and will do the job. I have that set up stock on my SGC, and have found it is easy to grab the sight picture, and easy to shoot accurately through these sights. Enjoy "learning to shoot the peep sight."

And I think your stock carries some really beautiful wood....nice rich color and grain pattern. Henry does a fantastic job dressing their rifles in great-looking wood furniture. Thanks for posting those very nice photos.

Cofisher wrote:My 357 Steel Carbine! I am thrilled to finally have it. The Skinner Lo Pro is mounted in the rearmost hole on the receiver. As you can see, it is only able to screw down so far. It extends into the bolt any further down. After some shooting, next week, I will file off the threads to allow for lowering the peep further. I will try to document the sighting and sight adjusting. I plan to stay with the Henry front bead, for now anyway. I have already removed the buckhorn and will fill the dovetail with a blank. Maybe a spare aperture type.
I am still planning a scope, after I learn to shoot the peep sight.

I want to thank all of you for your ideas and comments. I have learned so much just reading of your experiences. This is just the beginning. I own a half dozen firearms, but this is the first one I went out and bought for myself.

I will post targets as I can.

Welcome from the Show-Me-State.

Very nice mods on your rifle. Yup, it does look a lot like my SGC! I most often use the .096" aperture, which came stock on the H001TLP. I have all the Skinner aperture sizes, and found this one works well. Otherwise, I would go with the ghost ring as you have. That is a good way to use the peep also. I have one ghost ring on another long gun, and when I owned my 12-gauge, it was made with a rear ghost ring and front blade, both stock. These rear sights are my favorite.

Thanks for posting your photo.

Yep my favorite too. I can't hit squat with regular sights anymore, eyes get older along with everything else.

Here are my Henrys. A .357 and a 45-70. I for one love the tube fed magazine.

I refinished my stock and stripped the powder coating off the receiver cover and barrel band. I really didn't like the feel of the polyurethane finish. It felt fake, when I want to feel the actual wood. CitrusStrip took off the poly (well, after 12 hrs only softened it, but it was easy to scrape off with the edge of a piece of softer wood, which didn't mark up the stock itself). Several rounds of lemon oil, then a couple rounds of Howards Feed-n-Wax. It really helped bring out the wood's beauty.

The cover and barrel band were stripped with a scotchbrite wheel, and although fast, it was aggressive and required a LOT of buffing to get the scratches out. Bluing was done with Birchwood Casey SuperBlue liquid gun blue. It came out decently, but I'm not sure how well it will hold up. It's easy to apply, though, and darkens the metal almost instantly.
