AR ad glitch for Colt Cobra?

Been looking through my March 2017 American Rifleman magazine, and noticed what I think is a photo glitch in a Colt revolver ad. This ad page is back-to-back with the March "Keefe Report," which covers the Colt Cobra .38 Special revolver (page 8). Look at the fellow in the Colt ball cap shown pointing the revolver [second photo from left].

Sorry that the scanned photo is a little blurry. Do you see the same glitch I see? The photo is quite small in the magazine, and I scanned and enlarged it causing the blur. My elder eyes think they see this fellow holding his left thumb along the side of the revolver, with his thumbnail almost sitting directly beneath the gap between the cylinder end and the forcing cone.

If so, the glitch is a "very painful ouch," if he were to shoot the snubby this way.
I'm glad for the reminder whenever shooting my revolvers!

BTW, the review of this Colt Cobra snubby is pretty good; looks like a neat revolver. If you get this magazine, check it out.

he's one trigger squeeze from a bloody thumb .... Colt has a history of producing some nice revolvers .... years ago I had one and was surprised to find that the cylinder rotated in a clockwise direction where our Rugers and Smiths rotated counterclockwise .... I was told that the rifling in the barrel spins their bullets the same way the cylinder turns .... on that I never could tell any difference

I'd love to see them produce revo's of the same quality. I seriously doubt that will be the case this time. Older Colt's had a lot of hand fitting and intensive labor; to do that level of work today would put those revolvers manufacturing costs in the thousands and price them out of the market. Not to mention that Colt recently laid off most of their top craftsmen. Much cheaper these days to pay assembly line workers to slap together computer CNC MIM machined parts than painstakingly hand fit high quality parts using talented gun smiths. All those talented, highly skilled and knowledgeable Colt craftsmen were given their walking papers recently.

I used to be a really loyal Colt fan. In the 70s and 80s especially. I bought a pair of Pythons, and a Colt Diamondback 22 to go with them.. Colt Troopers.. They were all sold when my daughter was born in Hawaii... to pay for the crib, changing table, stroller, playpen, etc, etc... that the ex just had to have. The nice stuff from the exchange wouldn't do, it had to be a special brand all the gals were buyin...

I kept the Diamondback... all the kids learned to shoot on it.

Too bad about loosing the Colt "snake" guns, Marine. Those were cool revolvers.

Not long ago I also read an AR book review about these revolvers. Nowadays they are in very high demand, and the asking prices are also quite high. The book title is: Seven Serpents—The History of Colt’s Snake Guns, by Gurney Brown. The author writes about the double-action Colt Cobra, Python, Diamondback, Viper, Boa, King Cobra and Anaconda. Interesting that the article notes "most of the book is devoted to the flagship Python (140 out of the 343 pages)."

One last comment. When there was info presented about the current costs of these snake guns, this question was posed: Is there such a thing as a “blue chip revolver?”
I've not before heard that expression applied to a revolver.....kind of interesting.

Yup, i've always regretted letting go of both pythons... they were made back when the Colts still had Royal Bluing, were very accurate, and, sigh, the two were ordered sequentially serialized. But, we love our kids and put them first.

I also sold my "like new" Ovation 12 string Custom Legend guitar, hard case, electronic pickup that fit in the sound hole thingee, and all the cool stuff I had bought with it from my reenlistment bonus a couple years before. I had started taking guitar lessons, and was into more mellow music, (John Denver) so I did a lot of finger picking...

I never picked up the guitar again, focussing my energies elsewhere.

About value?

I think I paid less than three hundred for that little Diamondback .22 back in '82. Though I would never sell the gun, a good friend offered me six times what I paid a couple years ago. A double edged sword though... as I have been looking for a 4" Diamondback .38 to go with the .22 for the last decade. I saw one at a gunshow ten years ago in "fair" condition... $800/firm.
NOT $795... $800 I saw one new in the box with all the paperwork recently pop up online for $1,995. I went back to check a couple days later... gone.

I kick myself every time I remember being in the sporting goods shop in the mall in downtown Honolulu, just before my tour in Hawaii ended. They had a 6" Python in the case marked 38 Special on the barrel. The box said Target Model. The gun was marked down thirty percent, everyone wanted .357 mag Pythons. The salesman said, make me an offer. I had never heard of a Python in 38 Special.
I passed.

Yup, I later found out, the 38 targets were made in limited numbers for a specific purpose and never made again. I kick myself every time I think about that chance, and not taking it. Lol. It wasn't the first missed opportunity, nor the last. Had a guy offer me a Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 last year, stag grips and all... price was about $75 more than "i" wanted to pay. The wife said, "THAT is one of your bucket list guns, down to the grips, just pay the man. I know you don't NEED the dang thing, but buy it and shut up." He looked stunned.

I should have listened. Every other used 44 I have seen since has been at least $100 more, and in worse shape.

That new Cobra does look like it's a nice little revolver. I feel a bit sorry, though, for the guy in the picture. He's probably pretty attached to that thumb.

Be interesting to find out what's inside the new Cobra. I imagine Colt had to re-design the lockwork in order to be able to make the gun affordable to build in 2017.

Look at your latest issue of AMERICAN RIFLEMAN there is a phantom view of the insides of the new Cobra. It has the usual Colt vee spring.
