Range Report April 30th, 1860

Cimarron 1860 Henry Rifle:

Not ideal weather for off hand work, but it's cowboy up or stay home. 50 mph wind ripping steady today, the good news is it's drying up my corrals, but the bad news is it wreaks havoc on 45 Colt lead.

Shot 50 rounds of Winchester 250 gr LFN. 2 targets. First one I shot was an 8" splash. 36 rounds with 28 in the black. Not great.

Next target was my last 14 rounds, much happier with this one. Most of those would drop what I was aiming at.

It's amazing how that darn wind tosses your bullets around. I guess with a 30-30 or 45-70 it would not be a problem, but this lower velocity big cowboy lead can end up nowhere near where you tried to put it. However, I LOVE shooting this old style frontier rifle. I guess the ones in the black got the job done considering the wind. Here's the targets:

That's great offhand work, even without the wind. In our area, those kinds of winds cause serious problems with downed trees and tree limbs. Our soils are all sand. Right, now, really hard to get a day that is anything close to a spring day. Still have snow showers in the forecast, this week.

Ya it threatened rain a little today, but when you gotta shoot, you gotta shoot. Thanks for the kind words. We'll see how long iron sights and old cowboy eyes ride the trail together.
