I used to run in college. Just for fun. I'd run from my dorm to the apartment some of my fraternity brothers rented. It was downhill to their place, about a mile and a half. I would run back and have a diet pepsi. As life went along, about 8 months since college, I haven't run for fun since then. The one exception was when my best friend was in the police academy 20 years ago. He had to run on his own for a two week period when they didn't have physical training. I had two weeks to get myself up to the three or four mile runs we would take. I did it for him, it was not fun. Fast forward to February on vacation in the Bahamas, I had the desire to run as the weather was optimal, but I had no running shoes. I took a mile or so run on the beach. It was paradise and FUN.
More than three decades took a toll for sure. Last July, I lost a total of 100 lbs in 18 months. I used a prescription pill monitored by a specialist and her staff. I am now on maintenance and maintaining the weight. I don't need blood pressure meds anymore and I have the energy and I want to run. Last month I got a great deal on a pair of New Balance running shoes and bought them. Today the weather was just over 50 and sunny in my part of Upstate NY. I put on my new shoes and I did about a mile and a half today. It was up and down hill for two thirds and level for the other third. I actually enjoyed it.
