Well, it's probably not a good idea to get into 45-70 unless you re-load, but when I saw this at the LGS, I just couldn't resist. That color-cased receiver and big 22" octagon barrel just drew me in. I tested it out with some Remington 405g SP - and was surprised at how mild the recoil felt - maybe even less than our 44MAG Carbine. Then I loaded it up with some Winchester SuperX 300g JHP - and wow - Kicks like a mule on steroids and barks like a 20mm cannon - I love it. I like em all, but this is definitely my favorite Henry. Already have a Skinner peep on order - also plan on putting a Lyman Globe on the front. The only downside is the price of ammo for this beast - good news is that the local Walmart sells WInchester 45-70 - not so good news is that it's still $32/box - need to start looking at reloading rigs...

I have the exact same gun and a really close friend just bought one as well because he liked mine so much. I took mine hunting last fall but I may get another one to hunt with. I like the all weather one as well. Al

congrats indeed .... understood on it quickly becoming a favorite, we feel the same way about ours .... is there a Cabela's near you ? .... the have HSM Cowboy Action ammo for $27 a box http://www.cabelas.com/product/HSM-COWB ... on%2B45-70.... it is fun to shoot .... their Bear Loads at $37 a box http://www.cabelas.com/product/HSM-Bear ... arch%3Dhsm will let you know its there and can stop any critter on the North American Continent .... all that being said, having a 45-70 is the perfect reason to get into rolling your own ammo

Yea - this thing may be a little heavy to lug around in the woods all day. I like those all weathers, too - we've got the 44MAG all weather and I think that it is the best balanced Henry rifle that we own - a real pleasure to shoot...

Thanks for the info, JEBar. I bet that HSM Bear loads kicks. The nearest Cabella's is about two hours away (Richmond, VA), but we occasionally make the trek - might just have to make it more often, now. Cabella's also gives a military discount, which is a-ok in my book...

Ammunition at Cabela's is available online and it's regularly offered with free shipping, though sometimes there's an order minimum of $99.... on rare occasions, there's no order minimum.

For myself, I would not easily be able to have a .45-70, primarily because of ammo cost and the fact that I'm a non-reloader. But interesting that I tracked through this thread this afternoon. I chatted with my son-in-law earlier today, who is an ardent hunter and excellent long-distance marksman. I've often chatted with him about Henrys, and although he knows/reads about the lever action rifles, he hasn't shot many centerfire Henrys. He has tried my .357 Big Boy and the .30-30 I've had, and especially was impressed with the .357 BBB.

To my surprise, he just ordered a new Henry this week at an LGS near his home. He's getting the case-hardened .45-70 H010CC rifle for hunting. And was he ever excited about this prospect. BTW, he is a long-time reloader, so I know he's ready to "work up his Henry load."

So I'm quite pleased for him, and I know it won't be a problem at all for me to try out his .45-70. Hopefully, that will happen this summer at the shooting range he has on his acreage. Then I'll also know what everyone on the Forum talks about when they say how much they enjoy this caliber Henry rifle! I'm ready.....

In a way, my excitement over the last few years of being a Henry owner has "rubbed off" on my son-in-law....he has looked at Henrys for a while now, and know he has found the Henry quality impressive. Glad he finally "got hooked" and will have this new rifle in his firearms collection. And yes, I am partially responsible, and do feel good about it!

I Love my Brass 45-70. Wish I could have found the one like you bought instead. I prefer the steel receiver, but the Brass is sure purdy and a great deal of fun and punishment to shoot. I reload 38/357's, 44 Mag and 45 Colt. I just have not invested in the dies for the 45/70 as of yet. Soon though. That is if I ever quit buying guns. I am at recover stage as of right now.

Cool --- you two fellows have some pretty clever thinking here. I definitely hadn't been thinking about ever owning a .45-70 myself, and therefore never came close to "planning" a trade of reloading supplies for some reloading service! Like I said, .

Bottom line is that I'll not get a .45-70 because I have another of the new 2017 Henrys in mind. I'll post on that model when the Henry "ship date" comes about, and will see if I can swing the deal. It would be nice for my SGC to have a fellow Henry in the gun cabinet again.

Bottom line is that I'll not get a .45-70 because I have another of the new 2017 Henrys in mind.

I also have a CCH 45-70 and YES...reloading is a fun answer to be able to shoot often and afford to feed the King. I also cast my own plinking and practice bullets. even home cast bullet with all the prep still cost a little over .09 cent a bullet.

Anyone else notice that the .45 Colt Bear loads could be used in a Ruger Blackhawk but not a Redhawk? Sounds like somebody doesn't know their Rugers very well. I have a Redhawk and a Blackhawk and I would say the red one is stronger.
