Bought H004 But one store would not sell it to me.

Post by Nam Vet » Thu Apr 07, 2016 5:36 pm

Finally brought my first Henry. Dicks Sporting Goods had H004 for $479.00 Got there they had 3 in stock picked out the nicest. OK I'll take it. Showed my Fire Arms ID and drivers licence. The manager came back with a smirk on his face, we wont sell a firearms to you in a loud voice. Seemed like the whole dept. turned and looked at me. New law all Doc. have to have a middle initial has to match all doc. My drivers lic. did not have my middle initial on it. Showed my military ID, everything else from the VA, all my CC with my middle initials on them.

I could understand his point but not his crappy attitude. Went to my LGS where I am member showed them the same ID and Lic. paid a bit more $495.00
15 minutes latter I left with H004 and a free box of 22lr and a smile on my face. Sent a nasty email to Dicks corporate headquarters with the managers name not that it would do any good...... Sorry for the rant but had to get it off my chest.

I don't blame you one bit. I would have done the same thing. Contacting the corporate headquarters was a very good idea. I have done the same thing several times for bad service. Usually a call to corporate or an email gets results whether you see it or not..

I'm also glad you went with lgs.

Congratulations on the Golden Boy, I'm sure that you will love it. Mine is the most accurate of my four .22's. You did the right thing even if you don't get a reply, but hopefully you will. There is no reason for an associate to treat a customer rudely just because he can reject your application. But like they say, it takes all kinds but with this type of attitude he shouldn't be dealing with the public in this capacity.

I hear you, loud and clear.

BS like this is the reason we all need some legislative clarity regarding regulations both in and out of our own states.

I can accept that ARs and large mags are not legal in my state, but if I can buy ammo shipped to CT from Cabela's and Midway and some others, but not from Gander Mtn, Academy, and more is infuriating. Why? Their advising lawyers or ignorant personnel.

Glad you own your new gun. Sorry it cost more than it should have.

Glad you got your gun and free ammo takes the edge off of it. But hate that you had to deal with an idiot. Some folks working in retail just don't realize how a crappy attitude can cost them business.

I gave up on Dick's Sporting Goods about 2 years ago. I don't even go in there to "browse" anymore, even if I'm waiting for my wife at the mall and I am bored, lol.

Thanks for posting the bummer situation at DGS, and also about the NJ law, Nam. Recently a good friend of mine visited my state from his home state, where you have to have a proper permit to buy ammo in an LGS. We stopped at Cabelas, and he gave me a "thanks" gift for housing him during his visit. It was a 50-round box of .357 Magnum ammo. He just couldn't believe it that he could walk to the counter, not have to show any paperwork or ID, and buy the ammo with no questions asked! It was sadly interesting to watch that play out.

Your 2nd LGS trip sounded great: got your new Henry, got very good CS at that shop, got the free box of .22LR ammo, but ah -- the best part was that you got to carry away the smile on your face! :D Good for you...glad it all ended up like that.

Enjoy that new Henry!

Congrats on the new Henry.

As for "big box" stores, I won't ever say never, but my one experience a few years ago with buying a gun at a big chain store was less than fun. Their policy made me feel like a criminal. I picked out my gun, got an ok from the background check, and then had to wait for a manager to come to the gun counter. He then carried my gun to the register, watched me pay for it, and then had me follow him to the doors, where I was then "allowed" to leave with my new gun.

What a joke, and what an insult. I realize this is standard policy at those kind of stores, but I have never again bought from one of them.

I've had bad service from Dick's Sporting Goods before and haven't been back in a year.

If they are an authorized Henry dealer, can you not let HRA know about the crappy service? I think I read somewhere they want to know if you have troubles getting what you want.

Good idea. Use our handy link to the Henry site while you are at it.

Congrats on your new firearm!

I am sorry that you had to go through all of this but you should consider getting your DL updated with your middle initial even if ALL of your other important papers are up to date and properly written. I would update it even if it is not DUE to be renewed (Day/Month/Year) and have your complete name with your middle initial MATCH on all of your important documents and ID 'cards'.

I am not just talking about buying guns but for any other important transactions in your life. Financial, medical, property, vehicle, life insurances, etc.

Homeland Security and big brother seem to want more from honest, American citizens and honest, LEGAL immigrants than they do with some other folks. I will leave it there.

Good shooting to you!

Congrats on the new Henry, but sorry you had the hassle.

Your story is why I have not bought anything gun related at Dicks, Gander Mountain, Bass Pro, Cabelas, Academy, etc. in years. I give my business to two or three locally owned gun stores. Chances are one of them has what I need and if they don't they are glad to order it for me. I would rather spend my money with people I know who act like they are happy to do business with me than to deal with the bad attitudes in those places. I know I may end up spending a little more, but customer service does have a value to me.
