Rifle in .327 Federal

Yes, this little sucker IS loud, but it's nice, it's REALLY nice...

My first experience with the round came when I purchased a Taurus J-frame .327fed/mag 6-shot 2" barrel revolver.
I have the identical revolver in .357magnum, but it's a 5-shot instead of 6.
Recoil was substantial, but manageable.
Next I purchased the Ruger SP101 .327mag with a 4.2" barrel. WOW! What a difference 2.2" makes!
Recoil was MUCH less, but there's a lot more steel hanging out there too.
Noise dropped a little moving to the 4.2" barrel.

It's actually about on par with the .357mag with full magnum loads.
.32 H&R ,magnums are somewhat quieter, .32S&W longs are like balloons popping, and .32S&W (shorts) are bunny-farts.
I doubt the .32S&W shorts would even make it out of a 20" barrel, but I'm kind of interested to see what a .32S&W long sounds like from that long tube. Those will likely need to be hand fed one round at a time in the lever gun. I doubt they'll feed properly being so short.

I'm hoping that even full magnum loads will be much quieter yet, coming from a 20" barrel, at least quieter for the shooter anyway.

our family 357's revolvers produce loud crack where our 44 mag produces more of clap of thunder (sorry, best illustration I can come up with ) .... as a pure guess, I believe 327 would be similar to the 357

I have been wondering whether a 20 inch barrel would be best in terms of getting the most out of this round. I created this graph from their data using Numbers on my iPad.

What I find interesting is that if you look at the figures for the American Eagle 100gr at 14 inches and beyond, the velocity does not gain more than about 15 to 20 fps per inch. The last number, at 18 inches, must be an anomaly since it is 28.

Unless you are a hand loader working up rifle-only loads using a slow pistol powder like AA9, or you just want the longer sight radius, I don't think the 20 inch barrel offers enough extra velocity to warrant the extra weight and length, compared to the Carbine.

The other two brands have pretty much flattened out and there is no need for a 20 inch barrel for them.

I wonder what the curve would look like for a hot hand load with a Lehigh 50 gr Extreme Cavitator? Has anyone seen load data for this bullet in a .327 case?

Another interesting thing is the huge jump at the lower end. This shows why the round performs so spectacularly out of a longer revolver barrel compared to a snubby like the shorter SP101 or the LCR. The newer SP101 4.2 is good; the Single Seven with a 7.5 inch barrel is a real hot rod. So would be a 12 or 14 inch Contender - I have plans for one of those eventually.

If I hadn't seen it listed on their page, I would have guessed this 50gr projectile would NOT be used for .327.
As a matter of fact, 50gr is light for the .32acp!

I wouldn't mind finding data for it though.
It would have to be a screaming fast little round with a 50gr pill.

I plan to work up some rifle loads for my Henry, when it gets here.

The Lehigh folks have not published any data for the .327, but in an email they told me that the bullet is "good up to 4000 fps".

Does Henry have a history of doing exactly as they say? If so, that is very refreshing in an industry that habitually lies and then looks surprised when buyers get mad at them for doing it.

They told me more than a month ago that my new Big Boy steel in .327fed/mag would ship March 2017.
As a matter of fact, Mr Anthony Imperata told me himself that my rifle would be drop-shipped factory direct to my FFL.

Today is the last day of March. I still don't have my new rifle and my FFL has not heard a word.
Right now, I'm not a happy camper...

I understand your disappointment. I will say though that delays in achieving expected shipping dates are not surprising in any industry. As I understand it, you did all the right things. Pre-ordered and pre-deposited the gun and were assured by Mr. Imperato that as a result you would get priority on shipping over the big distributors. I'm confident that he will keep his word. He's just that kind of person.

May I politely suggest that you email Mr. Imperato, tell him (politely) how very much you are looking forward to receiving this new rifle and ask if he could update you on when your rifle is likely to be shipped (if it hasn't been already). I know you are kinda PO'd but IMO it's a little early for that. In fact, March 31 was Friday and it's now only Sunday. If the gun was shipped on March 31 (within the window they quoted) there is almost NO WAY your gun would have arrived at your FFL yet. Just email Mr. Imperato and nicely ask if he can update you on when your rifle will be shipped. He has a bad habit of responding to emails 7 days per week.

It's a little early IMO to be getting angry at HRA.
