Woodpecker out front

Post by DWD445 » Mon Jan 30, 2017 6:22 pm

I've seen the female woodpecker in the elm trees out front a few times, but no male... till today !! Pics from my iPhone and through a window, so.
They don't seem to care about cold much, just pecking.
A few years ago, in the neighbor's tree, I saw a giant woodpecker. At least a foot tall !! All black with a red head.
One of the kind in the pics was on my garage stove pipe up on the roof, going to town !!
Sounded like a hammer hitting it inside

We have a half dozen species of woodpeckers, up here, and really enjoy watching them, too. One of them is the big one, the Pileated. Is this the one you saw?

They are pretty but can also make some pretty big holes in trees. They really did a job on my son's trees surrounding his house. Very nice photos!

You might just have little ones flying around soon.

We have 3 types of woodpeckers here in the UK; the Great Spotted, Lesser Spotted and Green. They are more often seen in the countryside than the towns, but they always bring a smile to my face whenever they come out of hiding. :D

You may be right SH !!
NCG, I think the one I saw was that species, but a male. It was a lot bigger than yours looks and a lot more red on the head.
They are cool to watch, as long as they stay off my chimney.

We get the Pileated down here in SW FL. They use our aluminum gutters to drum out their mating call.

I love woodpeckers if they are female and under 130 lbs . Like Julia Roberts

I saw a couple little ones a while back, not close enough and keep hearing a few next door.

Saw 3 little ones today,2 in the pic. And the other tree I don't see as much, noticed the peckers got it all messed up.

Woodpeckers out back

Post by CT_Shooter » Sat Mar 11, 2017 4:42 pm

They've been regulars in our backyard for as long as we've lived here. The Northern Flicker and the Downy Woodpecker. This picture of the two of them was taken an hour ago.
